Job summary

The City of Savage is hiring two full-time Maintenance Operator positions in the Streets Division of the Public Works Department. Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; at least three years in construction, maintenance and repair of streets, bridges, trails or parking lots provided or equivalent experience.
• Valid Minnesota Class B license at time of application; within one year must obtain Class A CDL with tanker endorsement and no airbrake restriction.
• Clean driving record and DOT drug-testing history.

Responsibilities

• Perform skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work of City streets, trails, and other infrastructure.
• Operate light and heavy equipment, small engine equipment, and various tools to complete tasks.
• Plow and haul snow; perform salt, sand, and de-icing operations using trucks and equipment.
• Respond to call-ins during evenings, weekends and holidays for weather-related operations.
• Patch potholes and install/repair signs and barricades; dig holes and trenches as needed.
• Safely operate and maintain chainsaws and field equipment to clear brush and maintain right-of-ways.

Job description

The City of Savage is now accepting applications from qualified candidates to fill two, full-time, year-round Maintenance Operator positions in the Streets Division of the Public Works Department. Maintenance Operators work individually and as part of a team to effectively and efficiently maintain the City's streets and other infrastructure for the safe use of Savage residents and the general public.

Regular work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., however the position also requires prompt and consistent response to call-ins on evenings, weekends and holidays for snow and ice operations, as dictated by weather conditions.

Full 2026 Pay Scale: $31.66 to $41.70 per hour. Anticipated Hiring Range: $31.66 to $34.24 per hour.

• Perform skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work of City streets, trails, and other infrastructure.
• Operate both light and heavy equipment, small engine equipment and a variety of tools to accomplish assigned tasks.
• Plow and haul snow and perform salt, sand, and de-icing operations using single axle and tandem axle trucks, front end loaders, pickups, skid steers and other equipment.
• Respond promptly to call-ins and work evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary due to weather conditions or other emergency situations.
• Operate street sweeper.
• Patch potholes, install and repair signs and barricades; manually dig holes and trenches.
• Safely operate, maintain, and perform field repairs on commercial-grade chainsaws to clear brush, remove fallen trees, and maintain public right-of-ways in compliance with safety regulations.
• Work cooperatively with other divisions and departments in the maintenance of City infrastructure and facilities and the delivery of public works services.
• Follow and promote safety rules and regulations.
• Maintain daily record of work performed.
• Occasionally provide on-the-job training or oversight for seasonal employees.

• High school diploma or equivalent and at least three years of work experience in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, bridges, trails or parking lots; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the work.
• Position requires a valid Minnesota Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with tanker endorsement and no restriction on air breaks, within one year of hire and for duration of employment. (Must have at least a valid Class B license at time of application.)
• Clean driving record and DOT drug-testing history.

Desirable Qualifications

• Previous experience in a municipal public works operation.
• Public Works Certificate from the MN Chapter of the APWA, or similar specialized education or training.

The job of Maintenance Operator requires sustained physical work in all types of weather. Position functions require the ability to manually transport awkward and heavy loads over short distances, to stoop, bend and lift overhead, to walk over uneven or snow/ice covered terrain, to manually load and unload heavy loads from trucks and other equipment, and to safely operate a variety of mechanical and power equipment and tools related to general maintenance operations.

Maintenance Operators spend approximately 95% of their work hours in the field and 5% in the City's maintenance facility.
