Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in equipment operation and street maintenance.
  • Valid Minnesota Driver’s License and CDL permit.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, constructs, and maintains streets, alleys, rights-of-way, grounds and related assets and equipment using light and/or heavy trucks and equipment, hand and power tools, and manual labor.
  • Installs, constructs, and repairs streets, sidewalks, curbs, trails, and boulevards.
  • Performs asphalt and concrete patching, crack sealing, and sealcoat preparation.
  • Installs and maintains street signs, traffic signs, and informational signs.
  • Installs and maintains pavement markings.
  • Removes snow, ice and storm debris from roadways and apply ice control materials.

Job description

The City of Fridley is seeking a dedicated Public Works professional to join our Streets Division. In this vital role, you’ll help build, repair, and maintain the city’s streets and rights-of-way - ensuring safe, smooth travel for residents every day. From operating heavy equipment and performing asphalt and concrete repairs to snow removal and sign maintenance, your work keeps the city running efficiently and safely year-round. Anticipated hiring range: $29.57 - $31.55
Responsibilities
  • Installs, constructs, and maintains streets, alleys, rights-of-way, grounds and related assets and equipment using light and/or heavy trucks and equipment, hand and power tools, and manual labor.
  • Installs, constructs, and repairs streets, sidewalks, curbs, trails, and boulevards.
  • Performs asphalt and concrete patching, crack sealing, and sealcoat preparation.
  • Installs and maintains street signs, traffic signs, and informational signs.
  • Installs and maintains pavement markings.
  • Performs tree and brush removal and maintenance, including the operation of aerial and chipping equipment.
  • Assists in the installation, operation, and maintenance of traffic signals, street lighting, and associated cabinets and cabling.
  • Loads and hauls materials for construction and disposal.
  • Constructs improvements and maintains City buildings and other assets.
  • Removes snow, ice and storm debris from roadways and apply ice control materials.
  • Plows snow and repairs snow plowing damage.
  • Loads and applies sand and de-icing chemicals.
  • Removes and hauls snow and ice.
  • Sweeps trash, grit, and sediment.
  • Loads, hauls, and disposes of debris.
  • Cleans and maintains light and/or heavy trucks and equipment and hand and power tools.
  • Washes and performs preventative maintenance and safety checks on vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists in mechanical repairs to equipment.
  • Clean and maintain work areas, storage areas, and tools
  • Supports the completion of capital projects, special projects, and City operations, maintenance, and repair.
  • Loads and transports personnel and materials to and from work sites.
  • Provide labor and equipment operation for special projects or events.
  • Orders, delivers, and moves materials and furnishings.
  • Establishes and maintains safe work zones in public rights-of-way.
  • Assists in equipment maintenance.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance and safety inspections on equipment.
  • Assists in mechanical repairs to equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains work areas, storage areas, and tools.
  • Estimates quantities of materials such as amount of asphalt needed for patching or loads required for a hauling operation.
  • Documents activities utilizing a computer.
  • Leads a section work crew and assists in training crew members.
  • May be assigned to assist with duties in utilities, park maintenance, and/or facilities maintenance divisions, as needed or apparent.
  • Participates in training and meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. High School diploma or equivalent; and
  2. Training or experience in equipment operation and street maintenance.
  3. Valid Minnesota Driver’s License and Commercial Driver's License permit.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Experience in performing snowplow functions for a commercial or governmental agency.
  2. Valid Minnesota Class A Driver’s License with Tanker endorsement.
  3. Experience in construction including road construction, paving, utility and drainage construction, building maintenance and construction, concrete finishing, construction inspection, or related experience.
  4. APWA Public Works Certification.
  5. MnDOT Technical Certification(s).
  6. Erosion Control Certification.
  7. Experience in heavy and light equipment maintenance.
  1. Knowledge of local and state laws and regulations regarding the operation of equipment, particularly those pertaining to their operation on public streets.
  2. Knowledge and skill in proper snow and ice removal techniques.
  3. Knowledge of small and large engine mechanics.
  4. Skill in operating heavy equipment and vehicles used in roadway maintenance and snow/ice removal.
  5. Knowledge of state and federal OSHA standards and requirements.
  6. Ability to perform job responsibilities in all Minnesota weather including climatic extremes.
  7. Ability to read, understand, and follow oral instructions and written materials in English, such as operating manuals and safety instructions.
  8. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  9. Ability to work independently and prioritize work.
  10. Ability to work collaboratively, cooperatively, and positively in a team environment.
  11. Ability to work on-call outside of normal work hours.
  12. Ability to handle a variety of assignments under moderate supervision within standard operating procedures.
  13. Ability to perform standard procedures and tasks using basic analytical ability.
