The Hanover County Government is seeking a skilled maintenance position responsible for repairing and maintaining building systems, including HVAC and mechanical equipment. The role includes overseeing contractors within a jail facility, requiring a high school diploma and practical experience. The candidate will ensure safety and compliance while interacting with staff and inmates, contributing to a secure environment.
General Description: This is a skilled position. The incumbent will perform routine tasks to repair and maintain equipment and systems throughout the working facility. The duties will include, but are not limited to, coordinating, controlling, and directing contractors and inspectors in and around the jail facility, with occasional supervision of inmates, without compromising the security of staff, inmates, and the community. Experience is preferred; however, training will be provided for the right candidate.
Organization: This position reports to the Lieutenant - Facilities Manager and supervises no staff.
Essential Functions:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Unless stated otherwise, the following are required: Basic understanding of plumbing and HVAC; ability to operate power and hand tools, as well as fire emergency equipment; ability to read, interpret, and work from schematics, diagrams, and manuals; basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and maintenance practices, with extensive knowledge preferred; good communication skills, both oral and written, for maintaining and preparing reports.
Education, Experience, and Training: Must be at least twenty-one (21) years old. High School diploma or equivalent is required. Coursework and/or apprentice training in building operations with mechanical experience, with a minimum of 3 years in the field, is desired. Certifications such as CFC license (EPA approved), HVAC, Universal Refrigerant Recovery, and Electrical are preferred but not required. Equivalent combinations of education, experience, and training that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities are acceptable.
