Job description

General Description: This is a skilled position. The incumbent will perform routine tasks to repair and maintain equipment and systems throughout the working facility. The duties will include, but are not limited to, coordinating, controlling, and directing contractors and inspectors in and around the jail facility, with occasional supervision of inmates, without compromising the security of staff, inmates, and the community. Experience is preferred; however, training will be provided for the right candidate.

Organization: This position reports to the Lieutenant - Facilities Manager and supervises no staff.

Essential Functions:

  1. Inspect and maintain all building environmental systems, such as HVAC.
  2. Repair or replace complex mechanical equipment.
  3. Maintain all environmental control equipment through relevant repairs and routine maintenance.
  4. Install, repair, and replace electrical devices, including all wiring.
  5. Complete routine maintenance tasks such as machinery cleaning, plumbing repairs, lighting/filter replacement, locks, and roofing.
  6. Maintain logs and complete daily reports.
  7. Order, control, and inventory building materials, tools, and cleaning supplies used within the facility.
  8. Operate and maintain the facility cooling plant, including pumps and cooling towers.
  9. Repair and maintain all types of refrigeration equipment, including kitchen equipment.
  10. Ensure knowledge and compliance with Occupational Health and Safety policies, hazardous substances, environmental, water, and noise regulations, as well as State and Local building codes.
  11. Maintain a Preventive Maintenance Program.
  12. Maintain all Fire and Safety standards, logs, and documentation.
  13. Interact with staff, vendors, and inmates to complete projects.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Unless stated otherwise, the following are required: Basic understanding of plumbing and HVAC; ability to operate power and hand tools, as well as fire emergency equipment; ability to read, interpret, and work from schematics, diagrams, and manuals; basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and maintenance practices, with extensive knowledge preferred; good communication skills, both oral and written, for maintaining and preparing reports.

Education, Experience, and Training: Must be at least twenty-one (21) years old. High School diploma or equivalent is required. Coursework and/or apprentice training in building operations with mechanical experience, with a minimum of 3 years in the field, is desired. Certifications such as CFC license (EPA approved), HVAC, Universal Refrigerant Recovery, and Electrical are preferred but not required. Equivalent combinations of education, experience, and training that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities are acceptable.

  • Pre-employment physical examination, audiometric testing, drug testing, T-spottesting, alcohol screening, and periodic re-tests as per policy
  • Must wear uniform, including safety equipment
  • Maintain phone for emergency contact
  • Daily contact with inmates
