Cleveland-Cliffs Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad in Negaunee, MI is seeking a Section Laborer in Maintenance of Way to safely perform track work as a crew member. You will construct, repair, maintain, and install tracks, switches and rights of way, using hand and power tools.

Candidates must meet safety standards, be willing to work all shifts (nights, weekends, overtime), pass drug tests, hold a HS diploma, GCOR, TWIC, and a valid driver's license, and be able to lift up to 50 lbs and work

Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED.
  • Must obtain GCOR qualification.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must obtain TWIC and pass TSA security checks.
  • Subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with safety, FRA rules and company policies.
  • Inspect track for problems/defects.
  • Perform track maintenance, repair, installation and rigging.
  • Read blueprints, regulations and instructions.
  • Safely operate hand and power tools.
  • Maintain general housekeeping.
  • Build productive relationships with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Work at heights up to and beyond 20 feet in all weather.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs; perform physical tasks.
  • Work on varied surfaces around moving equipment.
  • Follow safety rules and wear PPE.
  • Be available for all shifts, including nights, weekends, overtime.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Location: Negaunee, MI

Cleveland-Cliffs - Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad has an immediate opportunity for a Section Laborer in the Maintenance of Way Department at our Negaunee, MI location. This role is responsible for safely and efficiently performing work as a crewmember. The role also is constructing, repairing, maintaining, and dismantling/installing tracks, switches and right of ways using hand tools and equipment. Our ideal candidate will be accountable for safe & efficient work and operating practices, enjoys hard work, is self-driven, goal oriented and resilient. Most importantly, will demonstrate a safety conscious mindset.

Summary of Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies, applicable rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
  • Observes and inspects track for problems and/or defects.
  • Performs track maintenance, repair and installation and rigging of materials.
  • Reads and understands blueprints, regulations and instructions.
  • Works safely and efficiently with basic hand and power tools.
  • Performs general housekeeping and cleanup.
  • Develops and maintains positive and productive working relationships with co-workers and supervisors; supports others, demonstrates good communication skills, competence, good judgment, good work ethic, integrity, a positive attitude and character that inspires trust.
  • Position requires working at and climbing to heights of 20 feet or more, indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, in, on and around moving heavy equipment in close clearance spaces at times with occasional exposure to fumes, noise, dust, dirt and vibrations.
  • Requires the ability to frequently reach, push, pull and/or lift and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to 50 lbs. and/or exerting up to 50 lbs. of force, at times performing continuous physical tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Requires working, standing and walking on varied surfaces, uneven ground and/or climbing on/off equipment in varying conditions including concrete floors, gravel, rail car floors, snow, ore pellets, etc.
  • Requires a commitment to safety and the ability and willingness to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits to prevent on the job accidents and injuries.
  • Must work safely and efficiently and not cause a threat to the health and safety of self and others with the ability to identify safety risks and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations. Must utilize all protective equipment as assigned/required.
  • Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week in all weather conditions. Must be open to work any shift including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime and callouts.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Must have the ability to become and remain General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR) qualified.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC): requires candidates to submit to a TSA security assessment (to include, but not limited to, providing biographic information; identity documents; fingerprints; digital photograph).
  • Position requires random testing for drugs and alcohol.
  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Railroad experience.
  • State certified welder.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with at least 1 year of experience.
  • Track maintenance experience.
