LOCATION: City of Saratoga Springs – Department of Public Works – “Urban Forestry Crew”
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The following qualification(s) must be met and clearly detailed in the City of Saratoga Springs employment application form by the last filing date:
- Two years of full-time paid tree maintenance experience such as trimming, pruning, felling, planting and transplanting trees OR
- Three years of full-time paid experience in public works or building construction or maintenance activities involving application of carpentry, plumbing, masonry and electrical trades’ techniques.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess a current and valid NYS Drivers License and must maintain for the duration of employment.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE
- ISA Certified Arborist.
- Education/training in the field of Arboriculture/urban forestry/forestry.
- Certified chainsaw operator.
- Chipper/chipper winch operation experience.
- Knowledge of ANSI A300 standards and ability to perform Best Management Practices in arboriculture.
- Experience operating a mini skid steer.
- Safety orientated; use of PPE and safety standards in arboriculture.
- Knowledge of proper tree planting techniques.
- Strong knowledge of Tree identification.
DUTIES:
- The work involves responsibility for performing semi-skilled work on public works projects including the construction, maintenance and/or repair of municipal streets, bridges, parks and grounds, water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, and street signage and markings and for assisting skilled workers on such projects. Although a working knowledge of one or more trades is necessary, a Maintenance Mechanic does not utilize the more skilled techniques for any considerable portion of his/her time.
- The incumbent also uses tools, operates equipment and performs manual labor related to the project to which assigned.
- The work is performed under the general supervision of the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Public Works.
- General instructions are received regarding routine jobs with detailed instructions on new, unusual or difficult assignments. Supervision of others is not a function of this class. Does related work as required.
