Job summary

The Florida Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic for Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’ Nursing Home in Port Saint Lucie, FL. The role focuses on troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing building systems, and ensuring safe, efficient operation of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and related equipment.

Incumbent will work under supervision, perform preventative maintenance, and respond to after-hours calls as needed, with a strong emphasis on safety and quality workmanship.

Qualifications

• One year of experience in maintenance and repair of buildings, plumbing, and mechanical equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English (reading, writing, and speaking).
• Must be available to be on call and after hours for callbacks or shift work at night, at weekends, and state holidays when necessary.
• Must be physically able to bend at the waist, kneel, climb and crouch, able to work near loud noises and electrical equipment, work in basements, and tight spaces.
• Must have a valid Florida Driver's License.
• Must successfully complete our pre-employment screening to include, but not limited to, drug tests and finger printing.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshooting, repair, and document preventative maintenance to ensure equipment runs smoothly.
• Use tools, equipment, test, and diagnostic devices as needed to complete assigned duties.
• Assist the Maintenance Superintendent with safety and accident prevention throughout the facility.
• Maintain, alter, troubleshoot or repair electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, plumbing systems, and equipment including HVAC and laundry equipment.
• Install, maintain, or repair electric motors, motor starters, control circuits, pumps, valves, fixtures.
• Perform construction-related duties such as cement and carpentry work, light welding, and floor coverings repair/replacement.
• Inspect and maintain records on equipment like chillers, boilers, refrigeration, and fire protection equipment.
