Job summary

The City of Alabaster is seeking a skilled Maintenance Mechanic I to join our Public Works team. This role performs preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on City-owned vehicles and machinery to keep essential public service equipment operating safely and efficiently.

Essential duties include diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining engines, motors, generators, and related equipment, with welding and fabrication as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience in automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, or industrial equipment repair preferred.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and welding systems preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • CDL preferred or ability to obtain within designated timeframe.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, maintain, and repair mechanical and electrical systems on City equipment and vehicles.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and corrective repairs on engines, motors, generators, and related equipment.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems efficiently and accurately.
  • Dismantle, repair, and reassemble electric motors and components.
  • Re-wire electrical panels and replace defective parts as needed.
  • Perform welding and fabrication tasks associated with equipment repairs.
  • Diagnose and repair gas and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, including cars, tractors, mowers, heavy construction equipment, and other City-owned vehicles.
  • Order and maintain inventory of necessary parts, materials, and tools.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
  • Ensure equipment is operating safely and in compliance with applicable standards.
