Job summary

The Smithsonian Institution seeks a Maintenance Mechanic to perform carpentry, painting, plumbing and minor electrical repairs across assigned facilities, including historic buildings. Shifts may include evenings, weekends and holidays, with emergency callouts as needed.

Successful candidates will have physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, pass a background check, and maintain a valid driver's license. The role is covered by a bargaining unit and includes federal benefits; applicants should

Qualifications

Experience performing building maintenance tasks in commercial or historic environments.
Ability to interpret basic drawings/blueprints and follow safety regulations.
Strong problem-solving skills and manual dexterity.

Responsibilities

Perform carpentry tasks including installation, repair and general construction of items and structures.
Perform painting tasks for walls, floors, ceilings, and woodwork; prepare surfaces for painting.
Perform minor maintenance of plumbing fixtures and clear clogged drains as needed.
Perform a variety of minor electrical repairs to equipment and lighting, including updating exit signs.
