Job summary

The Florida Department of Corrections is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic at Franklin Correctional Institution in the Maintenance Department. The role covers general maintenance, preventive maintenance, and repair across plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry, welding, HVAC, drywall, roofing, and related systems in a major institution.

It reports to the FDC office serving its area and requires overseeing inmate workers as appropriate.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma or its equivalent and at least one year of experience in trades (plumbing, carpentry, welding, drywall, roofing, or food service equipment repair) OR four or more years of general maintenance experience.
• College or vocational training in listed trades may substitute for experience.

Responsibilities

• Perform general maintenance and repairs across plumbing, electrical, HVAC, cabinetry, masonry, welding, drywall, roofing, and related systems.
• Provide on-the-job training to supervised inmates in maintenance trades.
• Test, log, and maintain records for equipment per Department guidelines.
• Plan, organize, and requisition parts for maintenance tasks while following policies.
• Prepare reports and supervise inmates, participating in departmental training as required.

This open competitive advertisement is for a Career Service position located at Franklin Correctional Institution in the Maintenance Department.

The mission of Facilities Management and Building Construction at the Florida Department of Corrections is to provide a safe, secure, and efficient environment for staff, inmates, and visitors. This is achieved through the effective management, maintenance, and construction of correctional facilities, ensuring they meet all regulatory standards and support the department's overall mission of public safety and rehabilitation.

This position is not a telework position and is required to report to the FDC office in the area it serves.

JOB DUTIES:

This working position is responsible for the general maintenance, preventive maintenance, and repair of plumbing, electrical, cabinetry/carpentry, masonry, welding, HVAC, drywall, roofing, and associated systems necessary to operate a major institution.

• Responsible for general and preventive maintenance, and repair of various systems including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and more.
• Provides on-the-job training to supervised inmates in trades related to maintenance and repair tasks.
• Performs tests, maintains logs, and keeps records for equipment as per Department guidelines.
• Plans, organizes, and requisitions necessary parts for maintenance tasks, ensuring adherence to policies and procedures.
• Prepares reports and maintains custody and control of assigned inmates, participating in departmental training as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

• A Valid Class E Driver’s License
