Job summary

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources seeks a Maintenance Mechanic (Facilities Maintenance Specialist - Advanced) at the Kettle Moraine Springs Fish Hatchery to perform complex repairs and maintenance tasks below journeyman level. You will coordinate with the Hatchery Supervisor and Biologist to initiate and track projects and may direct others on maintenance tasks.

Job Title Maintenance Mechanic (Facilities Maintenance Specialist - Adv)

Due to this position being on the hatchery alarm call/respond list, the Department requires the person in this position to live within 30 minutes of the facility to shorten emergency response times necessary to protect the fish in the facility.

Position Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic is the lead maintenance person at the Kettle Moraine Springs Fish Hatchery. This position is responsible for complex repair and maintenance work below the journeyman level. The person in this position performs a variety of tasks of a semi-skilled nature including repair or replacement of existing structures or equipment that does not alter or affect the performance of any building system, structure, exterior walls, roof or exits or the fire protection system. They coordinate with the Hatchery Supervisor and Hatchery Biologist to initiate, submit and track development projects and maintenance contracts and occasionally direct and coordinate the work of other Biologists, Fisheries Technicians or Limited Term Employees on maintenance projects.

Starting pay for this position is $26.87 per hour, in addition to excellent benefits.Pay on appointment will follow the provisions of the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan.

This position is included in the classification Facilities Maintenance Specialist - Advanced within Pay Schedule/Range 03-13. This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit.

Probation: A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Driver License Requirement: The selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license throughout employment and meet the requirements of the State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle Policy. The candidate must be at least 18 years of age with 2 years driving experience. Candidates with three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years, or who have an OWI/DUE violation within the past year are not eligible to drive state vehicles.

Work Hours: Work hours may be variable and will include some work on weekends and holidays. This position will also be assigned on-call work on a rotating basis and be stand-by on a rotational basis for nights and weekends to respond to alarms related to fish life support systems. Work Hours occur 7 days a week, 24 hours a day by scheduling, or emergency.

Travel: Periodic travel is required both within the district and statewide.

Emergency Response Time: Must be able to respond within 30 minutes to the workstation when directed for emergency response.

Housing: The Department may require persons in this position to live in unoccupied housing units in order to prevent deterioration of Department-owned properties and in order to shorten emergency and other customer service response times.

Physical/ Environmental Factors: This position requires the ability to climb and work from ladders, scaffolding or hydraulic lifts. Also, the ability to work under unpleasant conditions such as dirty and dusty areas, extreme cold/heat and small or confined spaces.   • Setting up maintenance contracts and/or creating and implementing preventative maintenance schedules for equipment.
