Job summary

Blue & Gold Fleet in San Francisco Bay is hiring a Maintenance Mechanic to keep its passenger vessels safe, reliable, and compliant with U.S. Coast Guard regulations.

You will perform preventive and corrective maintenance on diesel engines, reduction gears, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and propulsion systems; diagnose failures; plan projects; order parts; and document surveys and work records. This is a union, on‑site role requiring a valid driver’s license and TWIC; pay ranges from $44.52

Qualifications

  • Three years of marine engineer experience in the small passenger vessel field.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience with diesel engines, marine electrical systems, hydraulics and propulsion.
  • TWIC or ability to obtain TWIC.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean record; travel between Vallejo, Alameda and SF may be required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on diesel engines, gears, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and propulsion systems.
  • Diagnose mechanical/electrical failures and perform safe repairs.
  • Plan maintenance projects, order parts, coordinate repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Complete vessel condition surveys, inspections and maintenance records accurately.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas aboard vessels and in shops.
  • Collaborate with engineers, captains, operations, vendors, and management.
  • Identify opportunities to improve reliability and efficiency.
  • Respond to scheduled and emergency maintenance to support fleet operations.
  • Promote safety, environmental stewardship, and compliance.

Company Description

Blue & Gold Fleet has been the premier provider of ferry and water excursion services on San Francisco Bay for over 40 years, offering the famous one-hour San Francisco Bay Cruise, the 90-minute Escape from the Rock Cruise around Alcatraz Island and a Sunset Cruise.

The company provides regular ferry service across the bay through its contract with the Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) service to: Harbor Bay, Main Street Alameda, Oakland, Richmond, Seaplane Lagoon, San Francisco Ferry Building, South San Francisco, Vallejo, Oracle Park (for San Francisco Giants games and special events) and Chase Center (for Golden State Warriors & Valkyries games and special events). Blue & Gold Fleet operates a fleet of 25 vessels.

Job Description

The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for maintaining the safe, reliable, and operational condition of company vessels in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and company standards.

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on diesel engines, reduction gears, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, sanitary, propulsion, steering, and auxiliary systems.
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical failures, identify root causes, and perform safe, effective, and lasting repairs.
  • Plan maintenance projects, order materials and replacement parts, and coordinate repairs to minimize vessel downtime.
  • Complete vessel condition surveys, inspections, maintenance records, and work documentation accurately and on time.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas aboard vessels, within company facilities, and in maintenance shops.
  • Work collaboratively with fellow engineers, captains, operations personnel, vendors, and management to ensure timely completion of maintenance activities.
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, maintenance practices, and operational efficiency.
  • Respond to scheduled and emergency maintenance needs as required to support fleet operations.
  • Promote and demonstrate an unwavering commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, regulatory compliance, and exceptional customer service.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a marine engineer within the small passenger vessel industry or equivalent field.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience maintaining diesel engines, marine electrical systems, hydraulics, pumps, propulsion equipment, and auxiliary machinery is preferred.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical systems using technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid unrestricted driver’s license with a clean driving record for the past five (5) years. (Travel between Vallejo, Alameda, and San Francisco facilities may be required.)
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), or the ability to obtain one.

Rate: $44.52 - 59.68 per hour (DOE)
