Job summary

Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva, NC is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic to help keep hospital facilities safe and reliable. The role involves routine repairs, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and safety testing of essential building systems and utilities.

You will work closely with the Facilities Engineer and team to address daily maintenance needs, maintain accurate records, and support patient safety. A high school diploma and 2 years of maintenance experience are preferred.

The Harris Regional Hospital Facilities Department is committed to maintaining a safe, reliable, and well-functioning environment for patients, visitors, staff, and providers. Our team supports hospital operations through preventive maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting, and monitoring of critical building systems and utilities. We work closely with hospital departments, clinical teams, and external service partners to address facility needs, maintain regulatory and safety standards, and ensure the hospital environment remains dependable and supportive of high-quality patient care.

How you'll contribute

A Maintenance Mechanic who excels in this role:

  • Maintain Safe, Reliable Facilities: Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting to help ensure hospital equipment, building systems, and utility systems operate safely and reliably for patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Perform Preventive Maintenance & Safety Testing: Complete scheduled preventive maintenance and required operational and safety testing of critical utility systems, including emergency generators, backflow prevention, water chemistry, alarms, steam traps, and electrical equipment.
  • Support Critical Hospital Systems: Perform monthly generator testing and assist with maintaining critical hospital utility systems to support continuity of operations, regulatory requirements, and patient safety.
  • Troubleshoot & Diagnose Equipment: Use diagnostic tools and equipment-including building control systems, electrical testing equipment, airflow hoods, and water-testing tools-to identify problems and support timely, effective repairs.
  • Document Maintenance Activities: Maintain accurate records of work performed, labor time, parts used, equipment asset numbers, test results, and repair details in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements.
  • Prioritize & Complete Work Independently: Assess maintenance needs, recognize and prioritize problems, complete assignments efficiently, and manage daily responsibilities with minimal supervision while supporting department priorities.
  • Collaborate & Apply Technical Skills: Work closely with the Facilities Engineer and department leadership to meet daily operational needs while applying skills in areas such as HVAC, plumbing, or electrical and supporting departmental initiatives.

What we're looking for
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Facility Maintenance Experience: Two years of facility maintenance experience preferred; healthcare or hospital maintenance experience is a plus.
  • Critical Thinking & Judgment: Strong critical-thinking skills with the ability to assess situations, troubleshoot problems, make sound decisions, and take appropriate action.
  • Technical Problem-Solving: Ability to recognize maintenance issues, evaluate potential solutions, and resolve problems safely and effectively.
  • Independent Work: Demonstrated ability to prioritize responsibilities, manage assignments, and work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Safety & Composure: Ability to work safely and effectively in a fast-paced, stressful environment while responding appropriately to unexpected situations.
  • Communication & Teamwork: Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with the Facilities team, Facilities Engineer, and hospital departments to support daily operational needs.
