Job summary

Smurfit Westrock plc in Hicksville, NY is seeking a Mechanical Maintenance technician responsible for performing general mechanical maintenance of facility and equipment. This position includes troubleshooting and repairing manufacturing equipment and facility systems such as HVAC and plumbing.

Job description

GENERAL PURPOSE

Perform general mechanical maintenance of facility and equipment in a timely and courteous manner.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Perform mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic maintenance of manufacturing equipment.
  • Repair and maintain facility systems (HVAC, chiller, boiler, plumbing, compressed air, and humidification).
  • Test and treat boiler feed water with specified chemicals.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical problems and make repairs as needed.
  • Perform basic welding, brazing, and cutting to fabricate items such as guardrails, brackets, and hangers.
  • Paint and perform minor repairs of building interior and exterior including masonry, wallboard, ceiling tiles, woodwork, etc.
  • Use rulers, calipers, micrometers, and other measuring instruments accurately.
  • Perform basic handiwork such as replacing light bulbs, ballasts, water and air filters, plumbing fixtures, cleaning drains and hanging pictures and bulletin boards.
  • Maintain the interior and exterior of the building including woodwork and replacing ceiling tiles.
  • Prepare and operate machine tools such as lathes, grinders, drill presses, and mills to repair or fabricate machine parts and/or fixtures.
  • Troubleshoot minor electric and electronic problems.
  • Perform inspections of and tests fire alarms and pumps.
  • Support various recycling programs such as light bulbs, batteries, and metals.
  • Operate scissors and forklifts.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to properly use rulers, calipers, micrometers, and other precision measuring instruments.
  • Working knowledge of AC/DC motors.
  • Training in basic electrical and mechanical safety.
  • Basic computer experience.
  • Knowledge of the safe use of hand tools and small power tools.
  • Ability to pass color vision and color‑hue testing.
  • Consistent and reliable attendance.
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed.
  • Ability to perform all essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The starting rate is $27.91 per hour, depending on your role, level, and location.
