Maintenance Manager (Vehicle maintenance)

We are seeking a big-picture-minded Maintenance Manager, someone who can create a vision and mission for a maintenance team. A person who can delegate tasks and responsibilities to maintenance supervisors in an effective, positive, and efficient manner. Our Maintenance Director will uphold strict adherence and personal accountability by understanding and following OSHA guidelines and other regulations. This person will exhibit problem-solving and team-building skills.

  • Adheres to preventive maintenance principles and quality management.
  • Extensive knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws pertaining to maintenance.
  • Knowledge of Labor Management policies and procedures.
  • Ability to interact and communicate with public officials and all levels of staff including managers, supervisors, collective bargaining employees, and intra-department personnel.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, procedures, and policies related to bus maintenance.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relations with teams, colleagues, the union, the public, medical and governmental agencies, elected officials, and the board of trustees.
  • Provides oversight, direction, and coordination of staff in the provision of cost-effective, efficient, and reliable transit services within available and financial resources.
  • Impeccable judgment and ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced, dynamic setting.
  • Executive-level presentation skills and ability to handle high-level client interactions.
  • Strong interpersonal, relationship-building, and negotiating skills.
  • Tracking expenses/overseeing the budget for maintenance striving for cost-effectiveness.

Essential Functions / Process Responsibilities include the following: other duties may be assigned as necessary:

  • Administers and supervises the implementation of a comprehensive preventative maintenance program.
  • Management of Employee hours and Department Payroll
  • Labor Relations with Local Union
  • Manage the equipment and facility maintenance repair division.
  • Prepares operating and capital budgets.
  • Controls expenditures of allocated funds.
  • Evaluates work methods and operations, division policy, procedures, and services to determine effectiveness.
  • Reviews reports filed by all maintenance employees daily.
  • Develops various procedures and policies related to maintenance operations.
  • Meets regularly with the Safety and Training officers to review various projects and programs.
  • Works with various Authority Directors to develop, implement and support existing programs.
  • Meets with local, state, and federal agencies regarding maintenance-related projects.
  • Represents the department on the labor/management committee.
  • Meets with Union Representatives on an ongoing basis to discuss various discipline cases, work assignment issues, and general operating issues.
  • Negotiates with vendors to resolve warranty issues and the recovery of associated funds.
  • Manage contractual services to maintain vehicles, systems, and facilities.
  • Makes presentations on maintenance-related topics to various groups.
  • Review and recommend capital expenditures for items that will increase efficiency and services of the department.
  • Oversee department inventories and stock controls.
  • Track trends using historical data, implements and adapts the department to reduce service issues.
  • Respond to after hour emergencies as needed.
Safety & Compliance
  • Works with all company and local team members to create a strong, vibrant, and engaging safety culture.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in coordinating transit safety and service delivery, field operations, labor relations, staff development, and collective bargaining negotiation skills in a union environment strongly preferred.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations (EPA, OSHA, DOT, ADA, and EEOC).

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large and diverse workforce, especially in a unionized setting that requires intense attention to customer service and the customer experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in industrial, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or Business Administration preferred
  • (5) years of transit or diesel vehicle maintenance management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong ability to perform and manage multiple projects at the same time.
  • Ability to manage and organize work assignments, styles, and relationships with several respective managers.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks, manage time, and work without constant supervision.
