The Opportunity

A well-established power generation organization is seeking an experienced Maintenance Manager to lead the maintenance function at a large-scale generating facility in Queens, New York.

This is a senior plant leadership position responsible for the overall maintenance organization, including maintenance execution, planning, budgeting, workforce leadership, contractor coordination, and outage management. The Maintenance Manager will work closely with plant leadership, engineering, operations, commercial teams, and external partners to ensure the facility operates safely, reliably, and efficiently.

The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in power plant maintenance or operations, particularly within conventional steam generation environments, and will be comfortable leading maintenance teams through both day-to-day activities and complex planned outages.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the day-to-day maintenance function for a large-scale power generation facility.
  • Provide direction and leadership to maintenance supervisors, instrumentation/control and technical personnel, and maintenance planning resources.
  • Establish priorities and allocate maintenance resources to support safe, reliable, and cost-effective plant operations.
  • Conduct regular field inspections to evaluate work quality, identify potential issues, and proactively address maintenance concerns.
  • Drive continuous improvement in maintenance execution, productivity, communication, and team performance.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, employee engagement, technical development, and operational excellence.
Outage Management
  • Own the plant's overall outage management process and lead the planning and execution of major maintenance events.
  • Coordinate outage planning and execution across maintenance, engineering, operations, plant leadership, and other key stakeholders.
  • Manage multiple outage cycles while ensuring future outages remain actively planned alongside routine and forced maintenance requirements.
  • Develop and monitor outage schedules, work plans, budgets, and resource requirements.
  • Coordinate internal craft labor and outside contractors to optimize manpower and project execution.
  • Track outage performance metrics and costs and lead post-outage reviews to identify lessons learned and improvement opportunities.
  • Incorporate findings from previous outages into future planning and execution strategies.
Maintenance Planning & Work Management
  • Partner with maintenance planning and scheduling teams to establish and improve work management processes.
  • Utilize EAM/CMMS systems to support effective planning, scheduling, reporting, and maintenance execution.
  • Review maintenance work requirements, resource estimates, priorities, and expected costs.
  • Monitor work management performance and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and utilization of company resources.
  • Ensure maintenance and operations leadership have appropriate visibility into work plans, schedules, and performance.
Budget & Financial Management
  • Develop and manage the annual maintenance budget in alignment with broader business and plant objectives.
  • Monitor maintenance expenditures and resource utilization throughout the year.
  • Evaluate maintenance priorities and resource requirements to ensure cost-effective execution.
  • Track costs associated with major maintenance activities and outages.
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial performance without compromising safety, reliability, or regulatory requirements.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop maintenance personnel and supervisors.
  • Establish clear performance expectations and provide ongoing feedback and coaching.
  • Encourage employee involvement, innovation, continuous improvement, and effective problem-solving.
  • Work effectively within a unionized plant environment and partner with plant leadership and HR on workforce and labor matters.
  • Foster strong relationships between maintenance, operations, engineering, and other plant functions.
  • Champion plant safety and environmental programs across maintenance activities.
  • Ensure employees, contractors, and work activities comply with applicable safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote proactive hazard identification and risk management.
  • Maintain strong field presence and hold teams accountable for safe and compliant work execution.
Technical Environment

The facility includes conventional steam generation equipment, power boilers, steam turbines, generators, combustion turbine equipment, electrical systems, controls, and associated fuel infrastructure.

The successful candidate should be comfortable working within a complex power generation environment and have a strong understanding of the maintenance requirements associated with large rotating equipment and supporting plant systems.

What We're Looking For
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline, or equivalent combination of technical training and substantial power plant experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in power plant operations and/or maintenance.
  • Demonstrated management or departmental leadership experience within a utility, power generation, or comparable industrial facility.
  • Strong knowledge of conventional steam generation, power boilers, steam turbines, generators, controls, instrumentation, and monitoring systems.
  • Experience managing maintenance organizations and leading supervisors or technical teams.
  • Experience with EAM, CMMS, or other digital maintenance/work management systems.
  • Strong understanding of maintenance planning, scheduling, budgeting, and resource management.
  • Demonstrated experience leading major plant outages or significant maintenance events.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and Project.
  • Valid driver's license.
Preferred
  • Experience working in a unionized power generation or industrial environment.
  • Experience administering or working within a collective bargaining agreement.
  • Experience managing contractors and large craft workforces during major outages.
  • Strong background with steam turbine and boiler maintenance.
  • Experience implementing maintenance best practices and improving EAM/CMMS utilization.
  • Experience managing significant maintenance budgets and complex outage schedules.

This is a 100% on-site position based at a large power generation facility in Queens.

The role requires a strong field presence, including routine inspections and oversight of maintenance activities throughout the plant and associated nearby facility infrastructure.

The schedule may include extended working hours, weekends, outage-specific schedules, and on-call availability during major outages or unplanned operational events. This position does not require routine business travel.
