Job summary

Nucor Corporation in Houston, TX, seeks a skilled general laborer at the Texas Port Recycling facility. You will follow safety procedures, operate heavy equipment, and support daily operations in a busy industrial environment.

This role requires endurance for long shifts, the ability to work outdoors and indoors, and willingness to learn multiple tasks. Joining Nucor means contributing to a leading steel recycler with strong safety culture and team-based achievement.

Qualifications

  • On‑the‑job training offered by the company.
  • Ability to work 2nd shift, Monday‑Friday 6 p.m. – 6 a.m.; weekends as needed. Shift schedule may vary.
  • Experience using front‑end loader, excavator, forklift, skid‑steer, or scrap handler in an industrial/outdoor work environment.
  • Ability to stand or walk for up to 12 hours per day.
  • Ability to walk up several flights of stairs and work at heights above one story.
  • Knowledge of heavy‑equipment operating principles.
  • Ability to operate equipment under varying working conditions.
  • Stable work history.
  • Flexibility to work off‑hours, weekends, and holidays, including overtime and six days a week as required by production in varying indoor/outdoor industrial conditions.
  • Ability to complete job tasks safely and effectively without constant supervision.
  • Ability to work closely with others in a team environment.
  • Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to heavy‑equipment operations.
  • Ability to identify and differentiate metal materials, preferred.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions and effectively communicate in English, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Properly follow company and OSHA safety procedures.
  • Wear proper PPE as required.
  • Perform daily inspections on equipment and report any defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
  • Remove metals and debris from conveyor belt.
  • Work in outdoor and indoor environments.
  • Perform general labor duties, including sweeping, shoveling, cleaning, and physical handling of materials and supplies.
  • Willing to cross‑train in other positions and assist other employees as needed.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on all equipment, including shredder and eddy current devices.
  • Change liners, grates, hammers, and similar components on the shredder.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned by the Facility Manager/Supervisor.
