Job summary

City of Memphis is seeking a Crew Supervisor for drain and street maintenance. Under general supervision, you will direct small crews, oversee repairs of storm drains, inlets, ditches, street surfaces, and sewer lines from obstructions.

You will operate and instruct others on sewer cleaning equipment as needed. Required are a High school diploma or equivalent, five years in construction/sewer/drain or street maintenance, including at least two years in a lead role, plus a valid Class B CDL with

Salary Range:$49,001.94 - $73,985.60 Works under the general supervision of a field supervisor to direct small crews responsible for drain and street maintenance. Oversees and aids crews in repairing storm drains, inlets, and other structures relating to drain maintenance, street repair and maintenance including ditches and roadside, and sewer lines from obstruction and stoppage. Inspects manhole to locate stoppage, operate levers on truck to use appropriate tools to encounter obstruction, and to rotate cable or rods as necessary. Retreats rod to drag out obstructions and administers chemicals to remove obstruction as required. Operates sewer cleaning equipment, including power rodder, high velocity water jet, and sewer flusher to clean and disinfect domestic and other flooded areas. Instructs assigned crew on proper use, operation, and maintenance of various vehicles and equipment. Checks equipment for proper fluids and fuel levels as necessary. Drives truck to haul crew, materials, and equipment. Evaluates work performance, maintains time sheets, and provides disciplinary actions for assigned staff as required. Communicates with residents regarding work being performed. Uses mobile radio to communicate with supervisor and crews. Travels to various facilities to conduct on-site inspections.

Typical Physical Demands

Must be able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing with staff, management, and the general public. Must be able to operate a computer, general office equipment, and mobile handheld radio for communication in the field. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and assigned equipment. Requires traversing uneven ground, lifting, and carrying objects such as tools and power equipment weighing up to 50 lbs., as well as the handling of manhole covers and inlet grates (approximately 150 lbs.) with assistance. Requires bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching (including above head), standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and lifting. Requires the ability to climb in and out of manholes, catch basins, culverts, and other confined related structures.

Typical Working Conditions

Majority of work is performed in an outdoor environment and often exposed to various weather conditions, odors, dust, and traffic. Frequently drives to various locations to inspect and monitor crews.

Qualifications

High school diploma/equivalent and five (5) years’ experience in construction/sewer/drain repair or street maintenance, including a minimum of two (2) years in a lead capacity; or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must have a valid Class “B” Commercial driver’s license as a condition of continued employment. Must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules as a condition of continued employment.
