Job summary

University of Utah Health seeks a Senior Maintenance Engineer to ensure safe, efficient operations of a healthcare facility building. You will supervise, troubleshoot, and perform preventive maintenance on complex mechanical and electrical systems, while supporting after-hours on-call rotations.

You will apply NFPA 101 life safety knowledge, DNV NIAHO standards, and blueprints to keep systems compliant and reliable, with strong teamwork and independent work capability required.

Qualifications

• Six years of hands-on building maintenance and repair experience in areas such as HVACR, piping, electrical, or related systems.
• At least three professional licenses or certifications (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, OSHA, etc.) or pre-approved equivalents.
• Valid Utah driver’s license may be required depending on department.

Responsibilities

• Operates and maintains building systems to ensure safe, reliable care environments.
• Procures parts and equipment; manages CMMS work orders and reporting.
• Mentors maintenance staff and participates in after-hours on-call rotations.
• Ensures compliance with NFPA, NIAHO standards, and fire/safety requirements.

This position is the senior level position and is responsible for the safe and efficient operations of the assigned building as well as performing routine and preventative maintenance, analyzing/repair of mechanical and electrical problems, making adjustments, and other corrective actions to ensure the continuous and safe functioning of the healthcare physical environment. This position functions under the guidance of a team lead or above. This position is not responsible for providing direct patient care.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

• Performs all of the duties of a Maintenance Engineer I and II.
• Procures necessary parts and equipment in support of assigned duties.
• Performs all necessary functions in the established CMMS system, including developing new assets, procedures, work orders and compliance reporting.
• Mentors general maintenance workers and maintenance engineers.
• Completes required after-hours on-call rotation.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

• Verifiable understanding of NFPA 101 life safety code based on competency testing.
• Verifiable understanding of DNV NIAHO standards.
• Demonstrated knowledge of hot water systems, boiler theory and function, and chiller system theory.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Fire Barrier theory and NFPA requirements for sealing penetrations, fire alarm systems theory and testing.
• Demonstrated knowledge of medical gasses control and isolation valve theory.
• Demonstrated knowledge of CMS function.
• Demonstrated proficiency in basic computer functions.
• Ability to read blue prints.
• Ability to participate in after hours on-call rotation.
• Demonstrated, strong interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently, or in a group.
• Ability to follow specific directions.
• Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.

Required

Qualifications

• Six (6) years of hands‑on, building related maintenance and repair experience in one (1) or more of the following areas: pipefitting, HVACR, steam-operated systems used for humidification and sterilization, pneumatic and electronic building control systems (BAC), plumbing systems, commercial or industrial laundry equipment, sterilizing equipment, gas or diesel engines and generators, kitchen and cafeteria equipment, mechanical and electrical systems, carpentry, troubleshooting, or welding and fabrication.
• At least three (3) of the accepted certifications or licensures that fall under any of the following categories: Professional trade license (plumbing, electrical, etc.), Professional trade certifications (HVAC, contractor, MedGas, OSHA, building operator, firestopping, emergency power, ASHE Certified Health Care Physical Environment Worker, etc.), or another potentially applicable certification or license, as pre-approved by FM leadership.
• Depending upon department of hire, a valid, State of Utah Driver's License may be required.
