Job summary

Axon seeks a Maintenance Engineer to improve reliability and maintainability of automated manufacturing systems in our Phoenix/Mesa sites. You will own preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance strategies and work with Manufacturing, Controls, and Maintenance teams to reduce downtime and extend asset life.

Responsibilities include RCA for recurring failures, implementing corrective actions, and analyzing downtime trends to optimize maintenance intervals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.
  • 3a06 years of experience in maintenance, reliability, or automation engineering within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of automated equipment, electrical systems, and mechanical components.
  • Experience performing root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions.
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced, production-driven environments.

Your impact

The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for improving equipment reliability, availability, and maintainability in an automated manufacturing environment. This role provides engineering ownership of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance strategies for automated production systems, ensuring safe, stable, and cost-effective operation. The Maintenance Engineer partners closely with Manufacturing, Controls, and Maintenance teams to reduce downtime, extend asset life, and support production scaling.

What You’ll Do:
Location: Onsite at our Phoenix, AZ Pinnacle office or our Mesa, AZ Skybridge facility.

Reports to: Senior Manager, Manufacturing Engineering - Assets Reliability

Direct Reports: N/A

  • Ensure that automated manufacturing equipment is reliable. This includes robots, PLC‑controlled machines, conveyors, vision systems, and material handling equipment.
  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring failures, downtime events, and chronic equipment issues.
  • Develop and implement corrective actions to eliminate repeat failures and improve mean time between failures (MTBF).
  • Design, optimize, and sustain preventive and predictive maintenance programs aligned with equipment criticality.
  • Analyze maintenance data and downtime trends to refine maintenance intervals and task effectiveness.
  • Use maintenance techniques based on conditions when appropriate. This includes methods such as vibration, thermal, and runtime‑based techniques.
  • Create and update maintenance procedures. Write troubleshooting guides. Keep equipment documentation current.
  • Standardize maintenance practices across similar equipment and production lines.
  • Support spare parts strategy, critical spares identification, and inventory optimization.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with Controls Engineers on PLC diagnostics, automation troubleshooting, and system upgrades.
  • Assist Maintenance Technicians. Offer troubleshooting support, training, and technical advice.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering and Operations to support new equipment launches and process changes.
Continuous Improvement & Cost Reduction
  • Drive reliability‑focused continuous improvement initiatives to reduce downtime, maintenance cost, and production risk.
  • Support capital equipment evaluations with maintainability and lifecycle cost input.
  • Track and report key metrics including downtime, MTTR, MTBF, maintenance cost, and equipment availability.
Operational Support
  • Provide on‑floor engineering support during critical downtime events and production ramp‑ups.
  • Participate in daily production, maintenance, and reliability meetings.
  • Support off‑shift or weekend activities during launches, major repairs, or critical events as required.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.
  • 3–6 years of experience in maintenance, reliability, or automation engineering within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of automated equipment, electrical systems, and mechanical components.
  • Experience performing root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions.
  • Ability to work effectively in fast‑paced, production‑driven environments.
What you Bring
  • Experience with PLC‑based automation systems is important. This includes performing diagnostics and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with CMMS systems and maintenance data analysis.
  • Lean Manufacturing or Reliability Engineering experience.
  • Experience supporting high‑volume or high‑mix automated production lines.
