Job summary

CLP Engineering, the maintenance-focused arm of City Light & Power, seeks a Maintenance Engineer II to support distribution and substation equipment. You will collaborate with stakeholders to enhance grid reliability, safety, and strategic initiatives across field and design workstreams.

You will apply maintenance standards, perform RCA investigations, and contribute to asset data analytics while working in a team that values accountability and collaboration.

Qualifications

  • BSEE degree with emphasis in power systems is required.
  • At least 2 years of experience testing and maintaining electrical power equipment in the utility industry.
  • Experience with maintenance and operation of electrical apparatus across sub-transmission, substations, and distribution systems.
  • Familiar with system record documentation (O&M manuals, blueprints, logs, etc.).
  • Knowledge of medium/high-voltage systems, power system analysis, and protective device coordination.
  • Knowledge of power system protection and relaying schemes.
  • Strong written and spoken communication, organizational skills, and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain knowledge of distribution and substation maintenance standards.
  • Help develop maintenance and testing standards for substations and distribution.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance programs aligned with RCM.
  • Develop plans for testing and maintenance of electrical equipment.

Position Description

The CLPE Maintenance Engineer II will work with the Engineering Maintenance Team to provide technical expertise in distribution and substation equipment, and collaborate with stakeholders to support strategic initiatives, grid reliability and safety.

Key Responsibilities
  • Possess and maintain knowledge of principles, practices, procedures, and standards related to utility power distribution systems maintenance.
  • Support the development and revision of maintenance and testing standards for electrical substations and distribution systems in alignment with industry best practices.
  • Assist with implementation of preventative maintenance programs that adhere to Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) initiatives, latest industry standards and manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Develop detailed plans and procedures for routine testing and maintenance of electrical apparatuses found in sub-transmission, substations, and distribution systems.
  • Collaborate in the design and implementation of asset recordkeeping database system to capture all test reports, inspections, and performance data for key electrical assets that can be used for analysis and preventative maintenance planning.
  • Analyze electrical apparatus test reports, field inspection data, and other performance data to identify performance status and life-cycle assessment of key electrical assets. Propose cost‑effective maintenance or replacement plans based on the technical analysis of the data.
  • Lead preparation of technical reports, presentations, and documentation summarizing Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for system reliability, and actionable recommendations for stakeholders.
  • Conduct outage analysis, calculate IEEE 1366 reliability indices, and support resolution of high impact outages to enhance grid reliability, resilience, and safety.
  • Perform field surveys and condition assessments of critical electrical assets and systems; identify deficiencies, and collaborate with site teams corrective action plans prior to management review.
  • Utilize GIS database to track and analyze and manage maintenance, testing, and inspections activities for large-scale electrical distribution systems.
  • Perform Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations of electrical faults, protection mis operations, power quality disturbances, and abnormal loading conditions; develop corrective action plans.
  • Maintain working knowledge of power system protection and relaying schemes for electrical distribution system.
  • Support training initiatives related to the maintenance program, equipment operation, troubleshooting, and best practices.

Skills | Knowledge | Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) degree from accredited university with emphasis in power systems (required).
  • 2+ years of working experience testing and maintaining electrical power equipment in electrical utility industry.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the maintenance and operational practices of electrical apparatus across utility sub‑transmission systems, substations, switching stations, and complex commercial/industrial power distribution systems.
  • Familiar with system record documentation, including O&M manuals, blueprints, as‑built drawings, logs, etc.
  • Familiar with medium- and high-voltage electrical systems, power system analysis, and protective device coordination.
  • Current with applicable utility industry standards, codes, and regulatory requirements.
  • Must have excellent analytical, organizational, verbal, written, and communication skills.
  • Must be a team player and be able to work with various partners from start to finish.
Work Authorization | Security Clearance
  • You must be able to work in the US without sponsorship.
  • Military Base Access Security Clearance is required for this position.
  • A valid driver's license with a record that meets the CLP Fleet Policy.
Travel
  • Travel between job sites expected with 20-30% overnight travel expected.
Physical Demands
  • Standard Lifting Requirement: May involve lifting or carrying materials up to 50 pounds, handling test equipment in the field during site visits.
Compensation | Benefits
  • We offer an excellent benefits package that includes medical insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, 401k with company contribution, paid time off and paid holidays.
  • Salary range: $82,000-$108,000/annual based on experience plus eligible to participate in Short Term Incentive Plan.
    • We reserve the right to pay more or less than the posted salary range based on factors unrelated to sex.
