Job summary

The Salvation Army North & Central Illinois Division is seeking a Maintenance/Janitorial worker to perform upkeep across Salvation Army facilities and grounds. The role includes appliance checks, minor repairs, and coordinating with vendors for more complex issues.

Responsibilities also cover vehicle maintenance scheduling, snow removal, landscaping, and assisting with donation pickups and seasonal campaigns. A Wisconsin driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • One year facility maintenance experience preferred; general maintenance and janitorial knowledge required.
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver’s license with driving clearance from insurer.

Responsibilities

  • Perform weekly checks of major appliances; change light bulbs; report malfunctions and contact vendors as needed.
  • Schedule and oversee maintenance for company vehicles; ensure fueling.
  • Schedule annual maintenance for boilers, AC, lawn mower, and snow blower.
  • Remove snow from sidewalks and walkways around facilities.
  • Carry out general landscaping: mowing, trimming, weeding, watering plants.
  • Purchase parts and supplies with Shelter Director approval per policy.
  • Check and clean gutters regularly.
  • Keep garages/storage areas clean and organized.
  • Clean up broken glass or liquid spills promptly and safely.
  • Assist with donation pickups and seasonal events such as Red Kettle Campaign and Toys for Tots.

Job description

Job Objective:

Performs maintenance and janitorial duties within all Salvation Army facilities and its grounds.

Essential Functions

  • Performs weekly checks of major appliances to assure they are all in good working order. Changes light bulbs as needed. Checks on reported malfunctions of appliances, equipment, plumbing, and electricity, heating and cooling in all properties; makes minor repairs if possible. If necessary, promptly contacts appropriate vendor to make repairs.
  • Schedules regular maintenance of company vehicles to include regular oil changes and other required annual or semi-annual routine maintenance. Ensures company vehicles are adequately fueled.
  • Schedules annual maintenance and necessary repairs on facility boilers and air conditioning, lawn mower and snow blower.
  • Removes snow from sidewalks and walkways in front and around the sides of all facilities, as well as the common area behind the shelter.
  • Performs general landscaping duties: to include mowing lawn, trimming hedges, pulling weeds, and watering plants, flowers, and grass.
  • Purchases parts and supplies needed for maintenance with prior approval of Shelter Director, following purchase policy.
  • Checks and cleans gutters on a regular basis.
  • Keeps garage and other storage areas clean and organized for their intended purpose.
  • Cleans up broken glass or spilled liquid from floor, parking lot, and other areas within facilities and grounds in a timely, safe manner.
  • Assists with donation pickups
  • Assists with seasonal events such as Red Kettle Campaign, Toys 4 Tots, etc.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or the equivalent preferred.

Experience: One year facility maintenance experience preferred. General maintenance and janitorial knowledge required.

Certifications: Valid Wisconsin Driver’s license, with clearance to drive from The Salvation Army’s insurance carrier.
