The City of Pleasanton is seeking a proactive and dependable Maintenance Assistant to support the Police Department by helping assist in the facility and fleet upkeep. In this hands-on role, you’ll conduct regular inspections of the building and vehicles, identify maintenance or cleanup needs, assist with minor repairs, and coordinate with fleet mechanics and building maintenance crews for larger tasks. This position offers a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes of police operations and support department events that bring the community together. Success in this role requires strong communication, time management, and a self-starting attitude. You’ll be expected to take initiative, plan ahead with both officers and mechanics, and manage your responsibilities independently, all within a supportive and collaborative team environment.

- Inspects vehicles and equipment (batteries, tires, lights, fuses, suspension, brakes, etc.) to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Performs routine repair and adjustments to vehicles and mechanical equipment to include repairing/replacing, tires, batteries, lights, fuses and other mechanical and/or electrical components of vehicles and equipment.
- Services and lubricates a variety of automobiles, trucks and equipment.
- Road tests vehicles and equipment to ensure proper operation.
- Delivery and/or pick up of vehicles, equipment, parts and other items as directed.
- Maintains shop and vehicle repair records.
- Maintains shop and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:Equivalent to one year of experience in auto maintenance and repair, or related field.
License:- Possession of a valid California driver's license.
- Ability to obtain a Class A license within one year from date of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Ability to:Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of automotive mechanics.
- Maintenance methods and practices.
- Engines, transmissions, brake systems, cooling systems and electrical systems of vehicles.
Skill to:
- Inspect and diagnose mechanical and electrical problems.
- Make minor repairs and services.
- Use basic mechanics hand and power tools.
- Keep records of work.
- Work with minimal supervision.
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
- Read and understand service manuals.
