Job Description
Maintenance Assistants may perform any or all of the following duties:
- Operate machine tools, including lathes, shapers, milling machines, metal cutting saws, planers, and radial drill presses to manufacture metal items, such as large bushings and special bolts, and perform less difficult machine operations, such as threading bolts and cutting keyways.
- Repair, maintain, and service automotive and mechanical equipment by adjusting hydraulic brakes, replacing wheel bearings, performing minor body work, and replacing components like starters, fuel pumps, water pumps, mufflers, and gas tanks.
- Perform routine replacement and repair of plumbing and steamfitting equipment; install new equipment by cutting, fitting, and threading pipe; remove existing pipes and fixtures; repair and adjust water mixers, thermostats, and fixtures; locate and unplug stoppages; repair domestic steam equipment; repair leaks; overhaul vacuum pumps; insulate steam lines.
- Cut, weld, and braze various metal materials; manufacture sheet metal items; assist in maintaining and erecting signs.
- Perform semiskilled carpentry activities including repairing doors, windows, stairs, furniture; operating shop machinery; erecting and renovating structures.
- Operate and maintain heating and hot water equipment; replace parts; clean equipment; check oil levels.
- Assist in repairing and maintaining locks; make keys; change lock combinations; install locks.
- Perform masonry repairs and installations such as brickwork, plastering, tile setting, and concrete finishing.
- Repair and rebuild roofs; assist in painting and decorating; perform interior and exterior painting; install wallpaper; spray-paint surfaces.
- Perform routine electrical tasks including repairing electrical equipment, replacing brushes, laying cables, maintaining lighting fixtures, outlets, switches.
- Assist in other maintenance activities, such as snow and ice control, as needed.
- Occasionally operate trucks and light construction equipment.

Job Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under a skilled tradesperson, OR
- Completion of a two-year technical school course related to trades, OR
- Equivalent experience and training from technical courses or military training.
Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes trade-specific classroom instruction, technical math, communications, and blueprint reading courses, totaling 288 hours. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
Candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license for operating motor vehicles.
