Job description

Maintenance and Facilities Engineer - (3746)

The Maintenance & Facilities Engineer provides support and technical leadership to the County’s Community Housing Corporation and non-profit housing providers. Under the guidance of the Maintenance & Facilities Engineering Supervisor, they oversee capital plans, projects, and maintenance programs, including daily, preventative, corrective, and capital upgrades. Responsibilities include advising on legislation and standards, building systems, safety, security, equipment, and capital improvements. The engineer also supervises and supports Junior Engineers and engineering co-op students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Design maintenance systems for SCHC and housing providers.
  2. Prepare tender documents, project drawings, estimates, and assist in contractor selection.
  3. Guide and inspect capital works projects, ensuring contractor compliance and quality standards.
  4. Supervise and mentor Junior Engineers and students.
  5. Assist with general supervision duties as required.
  6. Evaluate construction materials and methods.
  7. Develop maintenance policies and procedures.
  8. Ensure compliance with legislation, safety, and building codes.
  9. Collaborate with stakeholders including boards, staff, suppliers, and authorities.
  10. Advise on maintenance priorities, resource allocation, and preventative programs.
  11. Ensure accurate documentation for drawings, scope of work, and estimates.
  12. Recommend equipment and material purchases within budget.
  13. Assist in developing operational and capital plans and budgets.
  14. Perform building condition assessments and update asset management systems.
  15. Attend board meetings, possibly in the evening.
  16. Build relationships with departments, inspectors, consultants, and trades.
  17. Prepare reports for County Council on asset and expenditure matters.
  18. Participate in committees as needed.
  19. Comply with health and safety legislation and policies.
  20. Maintain confidentiality as per privacy laws.
  21. Perform other duties as assigned.
LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES

Demonstrate leadership qualities such as customer focus, process improvement, and impactful communication.

EDUCATION, TECHNICAL SKILLS, AND CERTIFICATION
  • Degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of building envelope, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and safety systems.
  • Provide after-hours emergency support.
  • Knowledge of energy management and preventative maintenance.
  • Strong understanding of construction and maintenance systems.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and codes.
  • Experience with building assessments for residential properties.
  • Effective communication skills, written and oral.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Word, Excel; Asset Management (CityWide) and SAP are assets.
  • Membership in P.Eng. is required.
  • Valid G Class Driver’s License and vehicle access.
  • Criminal background and vulnerable sector checks.
  • Bilingual in English and French is an asset.
EXPERIENCE

Minimum of 4 years in technical roles, including at least 1 year in a supervisory capacity.

EFFORT

Requires visual and mental effort for design, problem-solving, and reporting.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Exposure to dust, fumes, heat, and confined spaces; some evening and weekend work required.

Salary Grade: $93,436.00 - $113,677.00
