Job summary

The City of Concord seeks a General Maintenance Worker for the General Services Department - Highway & Utilities Division. This role involves maintaining Main St. streetscape, parking facilities and related infrastructure, with weekend and overtime requirements.

Qualified applicants have a high school diploma or GED and at least six months of maintenance or labor experience, plus a NH Class B CDL with air brake or ability to obtain it within six months. CDL training paid.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; six months of experience as a laborer, maintenance aide, or trades assistant or any combination providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Valid New Hampshire Class B Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement or ability to obtain within 6 months of hiring.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains Main St. streetscape, parking garages and squares.
  • Performs mowing, trimming, irrigation repairs, pruning and other maintenance tasks; handles brick/granite areas and concrete.
  • Maintains parking meter posts; operates trucks/tractors for snow removal; performs minor equipment maintenance.
  • Overtime and weekend work are required; performs other related duties as assigned.

TYPICAL WORK SHIFT/SCHEDULE: Days, 40 Hours Sunday thru Saturday, Overtime is a requirement.
STARTING SALARY RANGE: $21.29- $23.51 hourly. Top of pay scale is $28.64.

JOB SUMMARY

Performs a variety of duties involving the maintenance of the Main St. streetscape, parking garage maintenance, squares maintenance. Hours of work for the position will include working weekends.

Examples of Duties

(All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)

  • Operates complex landscape construction equipment in the maintenance of the Main St. street scape, parking garages and squares. May operate a tool cat, bobcat, trackless sidewalk tractor, mowers, backpack blowers, walk behind sweeper and vacuum, hand tools.
  • Performs maintenance work such as mowing, trimming, weeding, irrigation repairs, raking, fertilizing, shoveling, sweeping, and pruning trees; maintains and repairs brick and granite work, concrete areas and other similar fixtures.
  • Maintains parking meter posts, which includes, replacing missing posts, and repairing bent or loose posts.
  • Operates trucks and small tractors for snow removal operations during the winter months.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repair to equipment and machinery.
  • Overtime and weekend schedules are a requirement of this position.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED; Six months of experience as a laborer, maintenance aide, or trades assistant or any combination of education, training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid New Hampshire Class (B) Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hiring.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of:

  • Standard tools, methods, practices, and materials of one or more trades.
  • Operation of power equipment and light to medium automotive and other equipment related to assignment.
  • General construction and/or maintenance methods and practices.
  • Storm drainage methods and practices.
  • Park and grounds maintenance, and lawn and plant care.
  • Safe and effective practices of applying and handling pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides.
  • Simple math and measurements.

  • Operation of required tools and equipment.
  • May be required to possess some skill in welding.

  • Climb ladders.
  • Use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
  • Distinguish between shades of color.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a very noisy place. Work exposes the employee to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. Work is performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, steel toe shoes, safety vests, protective aprons, or gloves.
