District Maintenance Technician – Job Description

Employment: Full-time, hourly, non-exempt

Schedule: Up to 40 hours per week, year-round

Reports to: Superintendent or designee

Compensation: $20.00 per hour, may be adjusted based on qualifications and experience

Position Summary

The District Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining safe, clean, functional, and well-maintained facilities and grounds throughout the District.

The Maintenance Technician serves as a primary resource for routine building maintenance, repairs, preventive maintenance, grounds care, snow removal, and coordination with outside contractors. The position requires a dependable, self-directed individual who can identify problems, prioritize maintenance needs, perform routine repairs, and recognize when specialized work should be referred to qualified contractors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Perform routine maintenance and repairs throughout district buildings and facilities.

Inspect buildings, equipment, grounds, and mechanical systems and report maintenance concerns.

Perform basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, drywall, painting, door/hardware, and general repair work.

Assist with operation, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems.

Perform preventive maintenance on building systems, equipment, and facilities.

Replace light bulbs, filters, ceiling tiles, hardware, fixtures, and other routine maintenance items.

Maintain safe and orderly mechanical rooms, storage areas, maintenance areas, and work spaces.

Maintain and repair playgrounds, sidewalks, parking areas, athletic areas, and other exterior facilities.

Perform lawn care, landscaping, snow removal, ice control, and other seasonal grounds maintenance.

Operate district vehicles, lawn equipment, snow-removal equipment, hand tools, power tools, and other maintenance equipment safely.

Assist with building setup and teardown for school activities, athletic events, and community use.

Respond to building maintenance emergencies and urgent facility issues.

Maintain records of repairs, inspections, preventive maintenance, and supplies as directed.

Monitor maintenance supplies and communicate purchasing needs to administration.

Coordinate with outside contractors and service providers when specialized work is required.

Assist administration with planning and prioritizing maintenance projects and facility needs.

Help ensure buildings and grounds are maintained in accordance with applicable safety requirements.

Provide direction and oversight to custodial staff as assigned, including coordinating work priorities, schedules, building needs, and expectations for the care and cleanliness of district facilities.

Maintain professional and appropriate conduct when working around students, staff, contractors, and members of the public.

Perform other duties as assigned by the superintendent or designee.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Previous experience in building maintenance, facilities maintenance, construction, mechanical work, custodial maintenance, or a related field preferred.

Working knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, painting, and general building maintenance.

Ability to troubleshoot maintenance problems and determine appropriate solutions.

Ability to work independently with limited supervision and prioritize multiple maintenance requests.

Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, snow-removal equipment, vehicles, and other maintenance equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively with administrators, teachers, staff, contractors, students, and members of the public.

Valid Iowa driver's license required.

Must meet all applicable school district employment and background-check requirements.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position, including standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing ladders, working at various heights, and lifting and carrying supplies and equipment. The position requires the ability to work both indoors and outdoors and in varying weather conditions. Appropriate equipment or assistance shall be used when handling heavier objects or performing tasks requiring additional support.

Work Schedule

This is a year-round position of up to 40 hours per week. The normal work schedule will be established by the superintendent or designee based on district needs.

Occasional evening, weekend, holiday, or emergency work may be required for snow removal, building emergencies, special events, athletic activities, or other circumstances requiring immediate attention.

Compensation

The anticipated wage is $20.00 per hour, based upon qualifications, relevant experience, technical skills, and the scope of assigned responsibilities.

Employees are eligible for benefits in accordance with applicable district policies, employee agreements, and Board of Education action.

Protect the safety and security of students, staff, and district facilities.
