Job summary

Auto-Owners Insurance in Michigan is seeking a Mainframe Systems Administrator to lead and support z/OS environments. The role involves installing, configuring, and maintaining mainframe software, with opportunities to take on team leadership or project coordination responsibilities.

After an initial in-person training period, this position offers a merit-based path with the possibility to work from home up to three days per week, reflecting our flexible work program and commitment to work-life

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred.
• Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to work with people in a team environment.
• Ability to clearly articulate thoughts verbally and in writing.
• Willingness to work occasionally outside the normal business hours.
• Experience in CICS installation/administration preferred.

Responsibilities

• Define and program software routines using established mainframe programming languages.
• Installing and/or maintaining vendor supplied software packages using SMP/E.
• Providing technical support to applications programming and other support areas in the use of systems software.
• Debugging problems where systems software may be involved.
• Changing operating system settings/options to support business needs and to optimize performance.
• Assisting in developing and recommending standards and best practices in the use of systems software.

The ideal candidate would have experience with z/OS systems software installation, maintenance and administration with experience in the role of team leader or project coordinator. The position requires the following, but is not limited to:

• Defining and programming software routines using established mainframe programming languages.
• Installing and/or maintaining vendor supplied software packages using SMP/E.
• Providing technical support to applications programming and other support areas in the use of systems software.
• Debugging problems where systems software may be involved.
• Changing operating system settings/options to support business needs and to optimize performance.
• Assisting in developing and recommending standards and best practices in the use of systems software.

Desired Skills & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is preferred. Coursework with emphasis in computer science techniques is also preferred.
• The individual should have strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to work with people in a team environment.
• Ability to clearly articulate thoughts and ideas verbally and in writing.
• Willingness to work occasionally outside the normal business hours.
• Experience in CICS installation/administration preferred.
