Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking a Senior Leader to guide a mainframe software engineering team, delivering complex solutions across GM business value streams. You will set the roadmap, balance modernization with debt, and drive AI-enabled, secure engineering practices.

The role requires cross-functional collaboration with platform, SRE, and security teams in a hybrid environment, reporting to US-based locations with strong communication to stakeholders.

Responsibilities

Lead, mentor, and grow a team of mainframe software engineers.
Own end-to-end delivery for a portfolio of mainframe applications across GM business value streams.
Translate business priorities into an engineering roadmap and maintain the backlog.
Balance new features, technical debt, and modernization work.
Provide technical direction on mainframe design patterns, data models, performance tuning, and system integration.
Drive adoption of Git-based workflows, code review standards, CI/CD automation, test automation, and repeatable validation.
Champion secure and thoughtful use of AI in the engineering lifecycle.
Partner with platform, SRE, and security teams on availability, observability, compliance, and operational excellence.
Use engineering metrics to guide decisions and continuously improve team processes.
Represent the team with product, business, and leadership stakeholders, communicating status, risks, and trade-offs.
Support GM’s mainframe ecosystem modernization toward an automated and AI-enabled software factory.

Requirements

10+ years of experience delivering and supporting mainframe solutions in a large enterprise environment
Strong technical background with PL/I and/or COBOL, JCL, IMS (TM/DB), Db2 (or similar), and scheduling solutions such as IWS and CA7
2+ years of software engineering manager experience and/or 7+ years of technical lead experience, including coaching, performance management, and team building
Proven experience leading cross-functional delivery efforts with business, architecture, operations, and vendors
Hands-on experience with Agile delivery (Scrum or Kanban), incremental releases, code review, and automated testing
Practical experience with Git-based source control, preferably GitHub, and CI/CD tooling such as GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps
Ability to operate in a hybrid environment integrating mainframe, distributed, and cloud applications
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field, or equivalent work experience
Must not require GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future
Must be willing to report to Warren, MI or Austin, TX at least three times per week
Willingness to travel less than 25%
