Job summary

Tata Consultancy Services Limited seeks an experienced Engineer in Technology to design, develop, and support COBOL/JCL mainframe applications in a McLean, VA environment. You will work on batch and online processing, Hogan system integrations, and batch scheduling.

This role requires strong debugging skills and a solid SDLC background. Ideal candidates have hands-on mainframe expertise (z/OS, TSO/ISPF), with DB2 and file handling experience, and a proactive approach to production support and

Qualifications

• Strong COBOL/JCL skills for mainframe batch and online processing.
• Experience with Hogan core banking integrations with COBOL/JCL.
• Proficient in mainframe environment: z/OS, TSO/ISPF.
• Knowledge of VSAM and sequential file handling and sort utilities.
• Solid debugging and incident resolution for batch processing and abends.
• Understanding of SDLC processes and production support.
• Experience with batch scheduling and change management tools.

Responsibilities

• Analyze business requirements and translate to technical designs.
• Develop, enhance, and maintain COBOL programs (batch/online).
• Create/modify JCL jobs and utilities to support batch processing.
• Support and troubleshoot Hogan-based mainframe interfaces.
• Perform unit testing and assist integration testing.
• Triage batch failures and production incidents within SLAs.
• Work with DB2/Databases for access, tuning, and resolution.
• Adhere to coding standards and change-management practices.

Must Have Technical/Functional Skills

Must Have

• Strong hands-on experience in COBOL (preferably Enterprise COBOL / VS COBOL II)
• Strong hands-on experience in JCL
• Working knowledge of Hogan core banking systems and their integration with COBOL/JCL mainframe applications
• Mainframe environment expertise: z/OS, TSO/ISPF
• File handling knowledge: VSAM, sequential files, SORT utilities (e.g., Syncsort/DFSORT)
• Solid debugging and incident resolution skills for batch processing and abends
• Good understanding of SDLC (Waterfall/Agile) and production support processes

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills

• DB2 (SQL, SPUFI/QMF, stored procedures exposure is a plus)
• Online processing exposure: CICS (preferred), IMS (plus)
• Tools: File-Aid, Abend-AID, Expeditor/IBM Debugger
• Version/Change management: Endevor, Changeman, PANVALET
• Scheduling: Control-M or CA7
• Mainframe modernization exposure (e.g., Micro Focus, migration, refactoring) is a plus
• Banking domain experience (cards, loans, payments, deposits) preferred

Roles & Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

• Analyze business requirements and translate them into technical specifications and solution designs.
• Develop, enhance, and maintain COBOL programs (batch and/or online).
• Create and modify JCL jobs, procedures, and utilities to support batch processing.
• Support, troubleshoot, and enhance mainframe applications and interfaces involving Hogan systems.
• Perform unit testing, support system/integration testing, and participate in implementation activities.
• Troubleshoot and resolve batch failures/job abends, performance issues, and production incidents within SLAs.
• Work with datasets and file processing involving VSAM and sequential files.
• Interact with DBAs/Support teams for DB2 (or other databases) access, SQL tuning, and issue resolution.
• Utilize scheduling and monitoring tools such as Control-M/CA7 (as applicable).
• Ensure adherence to coding standards, documentation practices, and change management processes (Endevor/Changeman/Git).
• Provide regular status updates and contribute to operational readiness and continuous improvements.

Generic Managerial Skills, If any
