Role Overview
eNGINE is seeking a Mainframe COBOL Engineer to support a large-scale transformation initiative within a financial services environment. This role centers on evolving critical legacy platforms while enabling tighter alignment with modern, distributed systems. The ideal candidate is driven by improvement and optimization—not simply system maintenance—and is comfortable operating at the intersection of technology, process, and business operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive the evolution of core mainframe applications by enhancing interoperability with distributed databases and service-based architectures
- Replace manual, error-prone operational processes with automated and scalable solutions across client-facing workflows
- Partner closely with global development teams, ensuring clear direction, accountability, and consistent execution
- Own technical outcomes end to end by identifying risks, addressing design gaps, and advancing solutions without waiting for escalation
- Develop a deep understanding of cash sweep operations and related business processes to ensure technology decisions align with real-world usage
- Influence stakeholders by clearly articulating technical tradeoffs, timelines, and business impact
Required Qualifications
- Strong background developing and supporting z/OS-based systems using COBOL, JCL, VSAM, and DB2
- Hands-on experience working alongside distributed environments, including relational databases and data movement strategies
- Proven ability to improve legacy batch, reporting, or conversion workflows through automation and optimization
- Familiarity with common mainframe scheduling, debugging, and data analysis tools
- Demonstrated success contributing to complex initiatives such as system conversions, client lifecycle workflows, or regulatory reporting
- Confident communicator who can collaborate across regions and take accountability for delivery
Preferred Experience
- Exposure to financial services domains such as brokerage operations, asset management, or insurance platforms
- Experience designing or consuming APIs, messaging solutions, or integration frameworks
- Working knowledge of performance tuning, SQL optimization, and large-scale batch processing improvements
- Background mentoring junior engineers or leading technical initiatives within legacy environments
