Position Summary

Responsible for obtaining, processing, sorting, and distributing mail and/or packages to the campus as well as providing customer service. Primary focus may be in a mail room, on a shipping/receiving dock, or on operating a meter.

Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Deliver mail and packages to departmental offices on the Danforth campus as assigned on a regular schedule. Rotate to a different route as assigned to remain familiar with all routes. Provide a high degree of customer services to faculty, staff, and students with accuracy and timeliness. Deliveries are time sensitive including delivery of research matters/specimens, supplies, equipment, payroll, accounts payable checks, and packages that requires obtaining the appropriate signatures. Collect out-going mail from departments and offices for further distribution. This service includes the collection of mail and packages from departments that need to be metered and mail with postage affixed. During staff absences, cover additional mail stops to fulfill the entire route sequence every day.
  • Sort and prepare incoming mail and packages received Federal Express, UPS, US Postal Service, DHL, and dozens of other WUSM carriers. Prepare inter-campus mail from School of Medicine, Danforth, West Campus, and North Campus departments. Organize and load mail and packages into mailing tubs and prepare for final loading into mail carts and/or campus vehicle based on assigned route.
  • Rotate to other areas of the mail services operation as needed including Danforth, West Campus, and North Campus. In addition, provide support in the student mail operations during peak periods including scanning packages and distribution to students requiring a high degree of customer service. Assist with logging international mail in excel report for the purpose of tracking weight and accounts to be charged by department.
  • Check before each delivery for accountable mail and packages with a tracking barcode. Obtain signatures on Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) during delivery route for accountable/trackable mail and packages. Ensure proper PDA syncing upon return to the office. Process signatures in University tracking system and file reports appropriately by date. Rotate scanning of packages and sorting of mail with other runners/carriers to remain well trained in each function.
  • Organize mail and packages that needs to be metered for delivery to meter operation. Assist with sorting and metering process as needed. Collect meter mail, add postage strips, help seal, and other tasks as needed. Assist with folding and inserting mail service jobs by machine or by hand as directed.
  • Record mail and package volume every day including inbound USPS mail, packages from all WU carriers/service providers, and campus mail. Utilize computer to assist with looking up staff names in the WashU directory for mail without proper box numbers. Other duties as necessary.

  • Ability to walk from building to building along mail route, up and down stairs, inside and outside of buildings, in all types of weather, including heavy rain and snow, frequently loading, unloading, and carrying heavy loads of mail.

Salary Range

$16.40 - $22.12 / Hourly
