Job description

The Machinist/CNC Operator, a staff member of the Physical Plant, is responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of the NYSCC machine shop. This includes supporting the needs of NYSCC faculty, staff, and students in safety, fabrication, design, and facility usage for curricular and research purposes. Responsibilities also include maintaining, repairing, and ensuring the safety of all machines and equipment in the shop.

This position complies with the Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for premium pay for hours worked over 40 per week, with supervisor approval. It is covered by the CSEA, Local 749 union contract, and the successful candidate will be a member of this bargaining unit.

Salary/Rate: $21.00-$24.00, 40 hours/week, Union Grade: U9

Requirements:

  • High School Graduate
  • Five years of experience as a Journeyman Machinist, including CNC programming, setup, and operation, with relevant training and certifications as deemed necessary

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in an academic environment
  • Skilled in welding processes (MIG, TIG, stick, oxy-acetylene)
  • Experience with abrasive waterjet programming and operation
  • Experience with CNC milling of various materials
  • Ability to lift heavy objects
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Experience with 5-axis CNC machines
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and Rhino CAD

Additional Knowledge:

  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to interpret sketches, plans, blueprints
  • Guidance in design and materials selection
  • Strong mathematical skills
  • Knowledge of lock-out-tag safety procedures
  • Emergency response capability
  • Experience with CAD and Microsoft Office

Essential Functions:

  • Perform complex mathematical calculations

  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance

Job Responsibilities:

  • Operate and set up machining tools, including CNC and manual equipment
  • Ensure safe use and maintenance of shop equipment
  • Assist faculty, students, and staff with projects and research
  • Manage workflow and fabricate projects
  • Oversee shop access and maintain equipment and supplies
  • Coordinate maintenance with outside contractors and report issues
  • Schedule repairs and maintain documentation
  • Perform preventative maintenance on CNC and other machines
  • Support safety protocols and environmental health standards

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

Must wear PPE as required, possibly undergo respiratory testing, and navigate uneven surfaces. May need to work outdoors in various weather conditions and in areas with hills and slopes.
