Job summary

Wabtec is seeking a CNC Machinist Trainee for an estimated 9-month training program in Fort Worth, TX. The role starts on 2nd shift or weekend shifts with a plan to transition after training and hands-on assessment. Qualifications

• At least 6 months CNC machining experience or completed a 6-month CNC certificate program.

• Must lift up to 40 lbs and use tools safely.
• Must pass pre-employment technical assessment.
• All employees are in-process inspectors; must be 18+ with HS diploma or GED.
• Willing to wear PPE and work in a tobacco-free environment; drug tests and background checks required.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate CNC and manual machining equipment including 4 axis lathes, mills, grinders, and measuring devices.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
• Assemble components and fully assemble finished parts as required.

As a member of the CNC Machinist Trainee Group, you will be responsible for performing multiple tasks to support the fabrication of locomotive/mining components. In addition to machining, you will have responsibility for assembling components and other duties as assigned. Machinists are responsible for working together as a team to improve manufacturing processes and promote a climate of cooperation. This is an estimated 9-month training program aimed at developing you into a fully qualified machinist; completion of a hands-on assessment is a requirement.

This is a 2nd shift or weekend shift position. Throughout the estimated 9-month training program, you will work on 1st shift and will be transitioned to your assigned shift following the successful completion of training and your hands‑on assessment.

Desired Skill Sets:

• Working knowledge of G&M code
• A minimum of 6 months of CNC Machining experience, or successful completion of a 6-month CNC certificate program.
• Basic knowledge of blueprints and manufacturing instructions to produce machined parts.
• Must be able to lift material up to 40 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Must have ability to properly use and care for assigned tools and equipment.
• Must be able to adhere to standards, do a quality job in a safe manner, within allotted time.
• Must have basic computer skills.
• Must be able to pass a pre‑employment technical assessment.
• Every employee will be an in‑process inspector.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must have high‑school diploma or GED or equivalent.
• Must be willing to wear personal protective equipment, for example safety glasses, gloves, hats, ear plugs and safety shoes.
• Must be willing to work in a tobacco‑free environment.
• Be willing to take a drug test & submit to a background check as part of the selection process.
• Be willing to submit to random drug tests.
• Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job.
• Must be willing to work as necessary to meet requirements of the position, including the ability to work occasional weekends and scheduled overtime.

What will your typical day look like?

CNC Machinists may include but is not limited to the following:

• Understand and perform all functions required to set up and operate a variety of CNC and /or manual machining equipment including but not limited to: 4 axis vertical lathes, horizontal boring machines, gear gasher, gear grinder, cylindrical grinder, mills and coordinate measuring machines.
• Use standard machine tools including, but not limited to drill press, band saw, lathe, press breaks, welding equipment etc., and a variety of hand, electric, and pneumatic tools
• Change and adjust tools as required to maintain quality
• Set up both fixtures and parts for machining
• De‑burr parts
• Use manual and electronic inspection devices to check multiple quality parameters
• Strong attention to detail, problem‑solving skills, and mathematical abilities required
• Promote climate of cooperation; leading by example mentoring others in safety, quality, environmental, lean and high performance work team philosophies
• Work with all facility employees on improving manufacturing processes through prototyping, fabrication and experimental machining to develop and prove concepts and design and implement necessary fixtures and tooling for manufacturing improvements
• Assembly of components and full assembly of finished parts
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications
• Knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and quality control techniques
• Material transport including the use of but not limited to, radio controlled cranes, forklifts and tuggers
• Prying and setting heavy equipment may also be required

All machinists will perform multiple tasks in any combination and concentration of the above‑mentioned areas and will rotate through all or most of the processes rather than being assigned to a specific task. Machinists must be able to work as part of a team having responsibility for assembling numerous components and other duties as assigned.

The starting hourly rate of this position is $29/hour (with additional night shift differential of $1/hr when working 2nd shift hours.)

Available shifts:

Shift availability is dependent on business needs.

4‑day, 10‑hour work week: 4‑day (Monday through Thursday), 2nd shift hours are 3:15PM – 1:45AM. 3‑day, 12‑hour work week: 3‑day (Friday through Sunday), weekend shift hours are 5:00AM – 5:30 PM. Must be able to work scheduled shift hours.
