Job summary

Florida East Coast Railway is seeking a Machinist to inspect, maintain, and repair locomotives in accordance with FRA regulations in New Smyrna Beach and the surrounding areas.

New hire training is two weeks at the New Smyrna Beach center with on-the-job training after. First shift runs 0700–1500 with Tue/Wed off; starting pay is $28.31–$31.85/hr, with increases to $35.39/hr after qualification, typically 6–12 months.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; or 4 years heavy mechanical repair experience.
• One year certificate from college or technical school acceptable.
• Experience reading blueprints.
• Qualified welder preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assemble and fit parts into complete units.
• Verify dimensions and alignment of assemblies.
• Install replacement parts and test operation for performance.
• Operate welding equipment to cut or weld parts.
• Perform mechanical inspection and repair to FRA standards.
• Test locomotives for performance using load box.
• Replace brake shoes and service locomotive components.
• Disassemble and rebuild locomotive trucks and related systems.
• Repair diesel engines and compressors as needed.
• Disassemble and reassemble locomotives and machinery.

Overview

Inspects, maintains, and repairs locomotives in accordance with FRA regulations. Start date scheduled for October 5, 2026. Paid training will commence in New Smyrna Beach training center, for two (2) weeks; thereafter, new hire Machinist will return to the New Symrna Beach locomative shop for on-the-job training.

First Shift - 0700 - 1500, Days off Tuesday/Wednesday

Initial pay between $28.31/hr - $31.85/hr based off experience. Salary will increase to $35.39/hr once qualified (typically takes 6 months to a year)

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly.
• Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly.
• Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of units to ensure functionality and performance.
• Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts.
• Performs mechanical inspection on locomotives and repairs defects to conform to FRA regulations.
• Tests locomotives for performance by use of load box.
• Replaces brake shoes on locomotives.
• Disassembles and rebuilds locomotive trucks and replaces wheel sets and traction motors.
• Repairs and rebuilds diesel engines, air compressors, and many other locomotive components.
• Disassembles and reassembles locomotives and machinery.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High School diploma/GED and One year certificate from college or technical school; or 4 years heavy mechanical repair experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience reading blueprints.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to understand both verbal and written communications – both general and technical. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

REASONING ABILITY

Problem solving and trouble shooting skills. Must have mechanical aptitude. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must be qualified welder.

Must have current valid driver’s license.
