HOURLY RATE: $37.62

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position handles precision machining, mechanical maintenance, occasional emergent repair of ships, and yard mechanical maintenance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

(Demonstrates a high level of mechanical ability and shows journey level proficiency in multiple areas.)

  • Proficient on a milling machine, drill press, engine lathe, and vertical/horizontal boring mills.
  • Complies with craft and shipyard safety and environmental measures.
  • Takes direction and requires limited guidance to conduct assignments.
  • Replaces defective parts on equipment, adjusts clearances and alignment of moving parts.
  • Aligns machines and equipment, using hoists, jacks, hand tools, squares, rules, micrometers, and plumb bobs.
  • Assembles and installs equipment, using hand tools/power tools.
  • Positions steel beams to support bedplates of machines and equipment, using blueprints and schematic drawings to determine work procedures.
  • Moves machinery and equipment, using chain hoists, dollies, rollers, and trucks.
  • Assembles machines and mounts them to foundations or structures, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Accurately lays out mounting holes and drills holes to proper size.
  • Shrink-fits bushings, sleeves, rings, liners, gears, and wheels to specified items, using thermal expansion or liquid nitrogen techniques.
  • Possesses knowledge of rigging, overhead crane operation, lifting device use and inspection, and load calculations.
  • Operates a lathe to grind, file, or turn parts to specifications.
  • Aligns pumps and motors efficiently using the dial indicator method.
  • Works at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Communicates effectively, works independently or in groups.
  • Performs basic math, reads blueprints and assembly drawings, and demonstrates proficiency with standard shop measuring tools.

Additional Skills:

  • Knowledge of shipboard machinery, propulsion basics, pumps, steam systems, underwater hull machinery, and shipboard systems.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma, GED, or higher.
  • 5 years of relevant work experience preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Requires standing continually, walking frequently, and occasional lifting up to 35 pounds.

Work Environment

  • Works indoors and outdoors, with safety equipment required.
