Job summary

FMI is seeking a Machinist to service machining requirements for carbon/carbon (C/C) products and related tooling at our Morin Street location in Maine. The role emphasizes manual machining, reading drawings, and interpreting tolerances to meet strict specifications.

You will set up and operate mills and lathes, inspect work, and follow Lean and safety procedures. A high school diploma or 2-year technical degree is preferred, with 0–2 years of related experience.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; 2-year technical degree preferred.
• 0–2 years of related experience; manufacturing experience required.
• Strong understanding of ASME Y14.5; ability to read and interpret drawings with GD&T.
• Experience with manually operated equipment.
• Lean / Six Sigma / Continuous Improvement experience preferred.
• Ability to work with a team and independently when required.

Responsibilities

• Repairs and fabricates metal parts by operating mechanical equipment.
• Assembles parts into sub-units or complete units.
• Uses blueprints and design sketches to ensure proper dimensions and tolerances.
• Takes material measurements and selects appropriate machine for the process.
• Set up and operate vertical mill, horizontal lathe, manual surface grinders, and band saws.
• Review and interpret engineering drawings and work orders.
• Determine tooling requirements and machining processes to apply.
• Inspect in-process and completed work to technical requirements.
• Maintain tooling and machines in clean operating condition.
• Produce consistent machining of carbon/carbon product.
• May handle hazardous waste per procedures.
• Align and secure fixtures, tools, attachments, and materials on machines.
• Monitor feed and speed during machining.
• Measure completed units to ensure conformance to drawings using precision instruments.
• Use optical comparators with digital displays.
• Participate in Lean activities and safety procedures.
