Job Description:

The Aerojet Rocketdyne Segment of L3Harris is seeking a Machinist B to work at our Orange, VA location. Our site near Culpeper, VA, in beautiful, rural Orange County (1.5 hours from Washington, DC) is growing! This site is our center of excellence for Solid Rocket Motor Propulsion and Energetics development as well as high-complexity production programs. This position sets up and operates a variety of machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, precision grinders, etc., to make parts, mechanisms, tools, or machines to exacting tolerances and dimensions.

Essential Functions:

• Interpret blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications; determine sequence of operations, number of cuts required, and method of setup and arrangement; work with a variety of machinist’s hand tools and precision measuring instruments; make shop computations; and fit and assemble precision parts, determining material, parts, and equipment required.
• Experience as a manual machinist on a conventional lathe and CNC machining in an industrial/manufacturing environment.
• Fabricate piece parts per work instructions, drawings, and specifications using required machine tools. Inspect parts per work instructions and drawings. Set up and operate machine tools.
• Use, adjust, clean, and store tools, machinery, and equipment used.
• Keep records and reports of equipment use.

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent with 4 years prior experience, or 2-year post-secondary/AA Degree with 0-2 years prior experience.

Preferred Additional Skills:

• Trade school certification or state-licensed Journeyman Machinist certification is strongly desired.
• Manual machining experience.
• Knowledge of setting up milling machines and lathes.
• Ability to read engineering drawings, blueprints, production plans, and work instructions.
• Experience performing in-process inspection of finished parts with appropriate inspection and gaging equipment.
• Knowledge of industry applicable laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations.
• Understanding of machine tools, shop procedures, principles, and properties.
• Basic mathematical skills for problem-solving.
