Job description

Position Location

This position is part of the Agency Support Operations, Government Publishing Office in Washington, District of Columbia.

Duties
  1. Assemble, install, maintain, and repair all types of printing, binding, and industrial machinery and equipment (e.g., printing, bindery, industrial trucks, power plant, and air conditioning units).
  2. Weld, cut, braze, manufacture, repair, and rebuild parts and items from raw metal stock such as stainless steel alloys, aluminum, titanium, magnesium, and other materials.
  3. Work with materials like rubber, plastics, and nylon using conventional or CNC machine tools and precision handwork.
  4. Set up and operate machine tools including lathes, boring mills, milling machines, shapers, grinders, thread cutters, and drills.
  5. Work from blueprints, sketches, work orders, models, or other specifications.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Pass all preemployment requirements prior to appointment.
  • Males born after 12/03/59 must register for Selective Service.
  • May be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
  • Obtain and maintain a security clearance.
  • Pass a physical examination prior to appointment; a strength test may be required.
  • Physical effort involves prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, and frequent lifting of objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Working conditions include exposure to metal chips, abrasive particles, noise, dirt, coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds, which may cause skin irritation.
Qualifications

To qualify as a Machinist, you must meet the following requirements:

Screen-out Element: Demonstrated ability to perform the work of a Machinist independently, including:

  • Analyzing complex configuration problems and determining solutions;
  • Troubleshooting machines and determining repair processes with engineering support;
  • Maintaining and repairing printing, binding, and related machinery;
  • Interpreting drawings and specifications lacking in details for making repairs.

Experience includes paid, unpaid, volunteer work, or service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps). All qualifying experience will be credited.
