Job description

Why should you be excited?

MTI isn't just another shop—it's a 100-year-old, family-run company (now 4th generation) that's the global leader in friction welding, trusted by names like NASA, Boeing, and Rolls‑Royce. As a machinist here, you're not just running a machine—you’re part of the team producing precision parts for aerospace, military, and oil & gas industries that genuinely matter. It’s stable, it's growing, and it's local—no relocation, just solid, skilled work in South Bend with a company that's been around a century and plans to be around for another.

What will make you successful?

The ideal candidate brings a sharp eye for precision, comfort with blueprints and GD&T, and pride in getting the measurements right the first time. Success here comes from a mix of technical skill (reading blueprints, running micrometers and calipers, understanding tolerances) and the right mindset—reliable, safety‑first, willing to learn, and able to collaborate with engineering and production teams to solve problems on the fly. If you have a love for troubleshooting and want to keep growing your skills (maybe even into CAD/CAM or G‑code down the road), MTI gives you room to do that.

In your role you'll...
  1. Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and Vernier calipers.
  2. Machine parts to specifications.
  3. Run production pre or post welding machining.
  4. Set up and operate CNC equipment.
  5. Measure, examine, and test complicated parts to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments.
  6. Set up, create, adjust, and operate all the basic machine tools.
  7. Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
  8. Monitor the feed and speed of machines as well as the tool life for each consumable during the machining process.
  9. Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
  10. Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and determine the need for adjustments or repairs.
  11. Check workpieces to ensure that they are properly lubricated and cooled.
  12. Maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
  13. Collaborate with engineering, supervision, and manufacturing personnel to exchange technical information.
  14. Evaluate experimental procedures and recommend changes or modifications for improved efficiency and adaptability to setup production.
  15. Maintain an organized machine shop in line with Lean Principles and 5S.
  16. Advise and recommend future technical and/or operational direction and process improvements as related to this function.
What We’re Looking For:
  1. Proficient understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance).
  2. Demonstrated ability to maintain manual dexterity and a keen eye for detail.
  3. Confident proficiency in mathematics and mechanics.
  4. Dedication and respect for safety precautions and safe best practices.
  5. Ability to use precision tools to take accurate measurements: micrometers, calipers, gauges.
  6. Knowledge of metal properties and machining tools to use for the various metals.
  7. Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and manuals.
  8. Flexibility and ability to quickly re‑prioritize tasks.
  9. Excellent verbal communication skills related to team development and cohesion.
  10. Must conduct oneself with the highest level of professional and ethical standards.
Preferred Skills or Competencies
  1. Basic welding knowledge and experience.
  2. Experience operating production equipment and meeting production requirements.
  3. Experience interpreting customer needs.
  4. Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving abilities.
  5. Experience with CNC calculating computer‑aided design (CAD) and computer‑aided manufacturing (CAM) software.
  6. Basic programming skills and machine set‑up skills.
  7. Basic G‑Code programming skills.
  8. Understanding and experience using manual equipment like lathes, mills, and surface grinders.
