Job summary

Qualifications

  • Ability to measure workpieces using gauges, calipers, and micrometers.
  • FAA repair station tool fabrication experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate machine tools to machine metallic and nonmetallic pieces per specs.
  • Read blueprints and job orders for product specifications and tooling instructions.
  • Position and secure work pieces using clamps, fixtures, or holding devices; adjust feeds and depths.
  • Observe operation and verify conformance with specifications using gauges and measuring instruments.
  • Operate bench grinders and other equipment; may perform welding or flame-cutting as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Overview

To perform functions assigned in the set up and operation of machine tools applying knowledge of machining methods. Precision instrument makers who fabricates, modify, or repair mechanical instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Performs set up and operation of machine tools to machine metallic and nonmetallic work pieces according to specifications, tooling instructions, and standard charts, applying knowledge of machining methods.
  • Reads blueprint or job orders for product specifications, such as dimensions and tolerances, and tooling instructions, such as fixtures, feed rates, cutting speeds, depth of cut and determines sequence of operations.
  • Positions and secures work pieces in holding device, machine table, chuck, centers, or fixtures, using clamps and wrenches. Moves controls to position tool and work piece in relation to each other, and to set specified feeds, speeds and depth of cut.
  • Observes operation of machine and verifies conformance of machined work piece to specifications, using measuring instruments, such as fixed gauges, calipers, and micrometers.
  • Operates bench grinder to sharpen tools.
  • Sets up and operates machines and equipment other than machine tools, such as welding machines and flame‑cutting equipment.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
Other Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • FAA repair station Tool fabrication experience
  • IDG/CSD machining and rework experience
