FMI's manufacturing facility has been a leading solutions provider of high temperature materials and composites for more than 50 years, serving the Department of Defense and NASA. The focus in Maine is on multidirectional reinforced Carbon/Carbon (C/C) and Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) that enable high-temperature components such as: thermal protection systems, re-entry vehicle nose tips as well as rocket motor throats and nozzles.

Our materials are being used on ground-breaking space initiatives such as the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle and the heat shield for NASA's Mars 2020 mission, important missile programs, airfoils in commercial and military jet engines, and as lightweight armor for U.S. military ground vehicles.

Your role: FMI is seeking a Machinist! As a Machinist, you will service all machining requirements including but not limited to (C/C) Carbon/Carbon products, test specimens, materials, manufacturing tooling and equipment components.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Repairs and fabricates metal parts by operating mechanical equipment
  • Assembles parts into sub-units or complete units
  • Uses blueprints and design sketches to ensure the proper dimensions and tolerance levels of the finished
  • product
  • Takes measurements of material and selects appropriate machine for the process
  • Set up and operate vertical mill, horizontal lathe, manual surface grinders, manual band saws
  • Review and interpret engineering drawings and work orders
  • Determine tooling requirements and machining processes to be applied
  • Inspect in-process and completed work product to technical requirements
  • Maintain tooling and machine tool equipment in clean operating condition
  • Produce consistent machining of carbon/carbon product
  • May be asked to handle hazardous waste per hazardous waste procedures
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines
  • Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work
  • Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process
  • Measure completed units to ensure conformance to drawing requirements using precision instruments
  • Use Optical comparators with accompanying multifunctional digital displays
  • Perform standard data and reporting tasks to support quality and manufacturing reporting
  • Expected to participate in Lean activities and to follow all safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment

** What we need from you:**

  • High school diploma or equivalent and/or 2 year technical degree; preferred
  • 0-2 years of related experience
  • Manufacturing experience required
  • Strong understanding of ASME Y 14.5
  • Able to read and interpret drawings using geometric dimensioning and tolerances, perform geometric and mathematical calculations in support of machining and inspection requirements, and use basic hand held measuring tools
  • Experience with manually operated equipment
  • Lean / Six Sigma / Continuous Improvement experience; preferred
  • Ability to work with a team and independently when required
