FMI's manufacturing facility has been a leading solutions provider of high temperature materials and composites for more than 50 years, serving the Department of Defense and NASA. The focus in Maine is on multidirectional reinforced Carbon/Carbon (C/C) and Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) that enable high-temperature components such as thermal protection systems, re-entry vehicle nose tips, rocket motor throats, and nozzles.

Our materials are used on space initiatives like the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, NASA's Mars 2020 heat shield, missile programs, jet engine airfoils, and lightweight armor for military ground vehicles.

Your role:

FMI is seeking a Machinist. You will service all machining requirements including but not limited to C/C products, test specimens, materials, manufacturing tooling, and equipment components.

Job Responsibilities:
  1. Repair and fabricate metal parts by operating mechanical equipment.
  2. Assemble parts into sub-units or complete units.
  3. Use blueprints and design sketches to ensure proper dimensions and tolerances.
  4. Take measurements and select appropriate machines.
  5. Set up and operate vertical mills, horizontal lathes, and manual grinders and saws.
  6. Review engineering drawings and work orders.
  7. Determine tooling requirements and machining processes.
  8. Inspect work to meet technical requirements.
  9. Maintain tooling and equipment in clean condition.
  10. Produce consistent machining of carbon/carbon products.
  11. Handle hazardous waste per procedures, if required.
  12. Align and secure fixtures, tools, and materials onto machines.
  13. Select tools, machines, and materials for machining.
  14. Monitor machine feed and speed during operation.
  15. Measure units to ensure conformance using precision instruments.
  16. Use optical comparators and digital displays.
  17. Support quality and manufacturing reporting.
  18. Participate in Lean activities and follow safety procedures.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or 2-year technical degree preferred.
  • 0-2 years of related manufacturing experience.
  • Understanding of ASME Y 14.5 and ability to interpret drawings.
  • Experience with manual equipment.
  • Lean/Six Sigma experience preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
