Job summary

Valmont Industries in Newberry, SC is seeking a Machine Operator 5 to operate machines per shop drawings, load programs, and maintain material traceability. Your role includes troubleshooting, basic maintenance, and contributing to lean manufacturing initiatives.

You will read blueprints, ensure quality, and communicate with the Production Supervisor to meet production targets and shipping deadlines.

Qualifications

  • Must have fast-paced manufacturing experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret shop drawings/blueprints.
  • Ability to operate forklifts and overhead cranes (where location permits).
  • Demonstrated attention to safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Operate machines per shop drawings and load programs as needed.
  • Process materials using designated equipment and maintain traceability.
  • Troubleshoot operating issues and determine resolutions.
  • Perform light maintenance and report maintenance needs.
  • Meet production schedules and minimize downtime.
  • Accurately measure and verify dimensions against drawings.
  • Collaborate with Shift Lead and Production Supervisor for continuous improvement.

A Brief Summary of This Position

The Machine Operator 5 position is an individual contributor. This person must be a highly driven individual that will operate machines in accordance with shop drawings through the use of designated machines.

Essential Functions
  • Operate a hand-held grinder to finish small part components
  • Load machine programs, as needed, specific to product orders
  • Process material in accordance with shop drawings through the use of designated machines
  • Troubleshoot causes of operating errors and determine possible resolutions
  • Maintain material traceability
  • Seek opportunities for improvements within the manufacturing department
  • Perform tasks according to production needs to minimize downtime
  • Determine machine maintenance needs and perform light maintenance, as needed
  • Manage time to efficiently produce quality products within designated work hours
  • Communicate information and provide feedback, in person, with co-workers, Shift Lead, Shift Supervisor &/or Production/Operations Manager
  • Perform lean, 5S, and/or general housekeeping
  • If applicable based on location, responsible for machine set up, including setting rollers to specified lengths, and verifying dimensions from shop drawings.
  • If applicable based on location, observe operation and periodically verify conformance of machined work to process sheet, specifications, and blueprint data.
  • If applicable based on location, use overhead crane to load/unload machinery.
  • If applicable based on location, use forklift to move or unload material or machinery.
  • Other duties as required and/or assigned.
Important Details about the Role

The employee is responsible for their own work. Must be able to work with other employees to complete job. Setup, operate, and perform general maintenance of equipment without difficulty. Make mathematical calculations in preparing product or setting up the machinery for specific parts. The employee must maintain a safe and productive work environment producing a quality product which is shipped complete and on time to satisfy the needs of the customer. The employee has a direct impact on safety, quality, productivity, TME (total manufacturing expenses), and customer satisfaction. This position reports to the Production Supervisor.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
  • Must have an acceptable attendance and prior employment record
  • Two to four years experience working in a fast paced manufacturing environment.
  • If applicable based on location, ability to operate forklifts and acquire forklift certification.
  • If applicable based on location, ability to operate overhead cranes and acquire overhead crane certification.
  • Strong hands-on working knowledge operating machines
  • Ability to read and understand blue prints/shop drawings
  • The ability to pay attention to detail and follow work instructions
  • Must be able to read a tape measure to within 1/32”
  • Ability to physically lift, push or pull a maximum of 50 pounds
  • Demonstrated strengths in interpersonal skills, including the ability to adapt and professionally communicate with a variety of people.
  • Must have a high awareness for safety at all times.
  • Must be a person of passion and integrity with the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two to four years of previous experience operating machines in heavy/fast paced manufacturing environment.
  • Exhibits strong mechanical knowledge.
  • The ability to communicate and interact with coworkers in a positive manner
