Job summary

Rainmaker is seeking fellows to develop ML models forecasting precipitation from sensor and radar data in El Segundo, CA. The role is paid, full-time, and on-site with a multi-month fellowship timeline, mentoring, and opportunities for future roles.

You will translate scientific questions into measurable ML tasks, build datasets, train and evaluate models, and deliver artifacts while collaborating with atmospheric scientists and Rainmaker’s ML team.

Qualifications

• Current undergraduate, master's, or PhD students; postdoctoral researchers; recent graduates; and other early-career researchers are eligible.
• Strong Python programming ability and experience with a modern ML framework.
• Ability to build, test, and debug technical work independently.
• Strong quantitative reasoning and the ability to design credible experiments.
• Interest in noisy, sparse, multimodal, spatial, or temporal data with physics relevance.
• Availability for full-time, on-site work in El Segundo, CA.

Responsibilities

• Translate scientific or operational questions into measurable ML problems.
• Build and curate training/validation datasets for the project.
• Establish simple, reproducible baselines before introducing complex models.
• Train, evaluate, and debug models on held-out weather events or conditions.
• Quantify calibration, uncertainty, and generalization limits.
• Collaborate with atmospheric scientists to define targets and success criteria.
• Produce clean, reusable code and thorough documentation.
• Present results to Rainmaker’s researchers and leadership.
• Deliver a final artifact such as a benchmark, model, or evaluation report.
