Job summary

Rainmaker in El Segundo, CA, seeks fellows for a paid, full-time Satellite Remote Sensing Fellowship. You will join a satellite-science group and work on a scoped project defined with your mentor, contributing to retrieval, validation, and operational-support tasks.

You will acquire and quality-control microwave/polar-orbiting/geostationary observations, reproduce baselines, validate against multiple data sources, and build reproducible workflows. Rolling start dates apply.

Qualifications

• Strong quantitative skills and programming ability, preferably in Python.
• Experience with atmospheric remote sensing, satellite meteorology, physics or related fields.
• Interest in microwave sounders, polar-orbiting observations, geostationary imagery, or retrieval methods.
• Ability to implement scientific methods, establish baselines, and validate results carefully.

Responsibilities

• Acquire, process, collocate, and quality-control microwave, polar-orbiting, and geostationary satellite observations.
• Reproduce an existing retrieval or baseline before testing improvements.
• Validate satellite products against radar, NWP, soundings, and in-situ measurements.
• Quantify detection skill, bias, uncertainty, and representativeness across meteorological regimes.
• Implement physically motivated, statistical, or ML retrieval improvements when justified.
• Build documented, reproducible workflows that others can run and extend.
• Present findings to satellite scientists, radar scientists, meteorologists, operators, and leadership.
• Deliver a final artifact such as a collocation dataset or retrieval benchmark.
