Job summary

PI (Physik Instrumente), LP is seeking a Machine/Grind Shop Manager to supervise our Shrewsbury, MA machining and grinding department. This full-time onsite role requires leadership, CNC knowledge, and workflow optimization to drive efficiency and quality in a high-precision environment.

You will plan production schedules, manage resources, and collaborate across engineering to implement best practices and tooling solutions. Strong background in ISO9001 and Lean manufacturing is essential.

Qualifications

• 15+ years of direct experience in a machine shop environment.
• Familiarity with ISO9001 and Lean Manufacturing practices.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications.

Responsibilities

• Oversee a team of machinists and precision grinders, providing guidance and performance feedback.
• Plan and organize production schedules to meet customer demands.
• Monitor production processes and implement corrective actions to maximize efficiency and reduce waste.
• Make daily decisions to support ongoing operations and scheduling.
• Manage releases of new jobs, directing resource allocation and daily work plans.
• Lead personnel hiring, development, retention, and training.
• Collaborate with manufacturing and product engineering to develop best practices, fixtures, tooling, and measurement tools.
• Ensure ISO9001 compliance and EH&S requirements are met.
• Maintain production reports for cost tracking, on-time delivery, and KPIs.
• Collaborate with facilities on equipment acquisitions and layout of work cells.
• Foster a positive work environment and resolve conflicts.

Role Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Machine/Grind Shop Manager to support supervision and daily management of our machining and grinding department in our Shrewsbury, MA facility. This is a full-time onsite position, Monday-Friday, 7am-3:30pm. This role requires deep knowledge of machining operations, CNC programming principles, tooling, and workflow optimization. Strong leadership, resource planning, and a solid understanding of manufacturing best practices in a technical environment are essential for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee a team of machinists and precision grinders, providing guidance, coaching, and performance feedback to ensure optimal productivity and efficiency.
• Plan and organize production schedules to meet customer demands, ensuring timely delivery of high‑quality products.
• Monitor production processes, identify areas for improvement, and implement corrective actions to maximize efficiency and reduce waste.
• Make daily decisions to support ongoing operations, production scheduling and planning.
• Manage releases of new jobs, directing resource allocation and daily work plans.
• Lead personnel hiring, development, retention, and training.
• Collaborate with manufacturing engineering and product engineering to develop best practices, fixtures, tooling, and measurement tools and techniques.
• Ensure applicable product quality, ISO9001 policies, and workplace environmental, health and safety (EH&S) requirements are met.
• Maintain daily / weekly /monthly production reports for cost tracking, on‑time delivery, cost per part, defects, and other KPIs.
• Collaborate with facilities manager on equipment acquisitions, maintenance, upgrades, and physical layout of work cells.
• Foster a positive work environment, encourage teamwork, and resolve conflicts or issues that arise among production personnel.

Qualifications:

• 15+ years of direct experience in a machine shop environment with demonstrated leadership and organizational abilities.
• Familiarity with ISO9001 and Lean Manufacturing practices.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Expertise with Haas CNC machine tools and/or Studer CNC cylindrical grinders is a plus.
• Experience with the implementation and use of shop floor management software is a bonus, especially if with Fulcrum.
