Job summary

Carmichael Development is seeking an experienced Machine Control Specialist to support our grading and site‑development operations in North Georgia/Metro Atlanta. Position Overview

Carmichael Development is seeking an experienced Machine Control Specialist to support our grading and site-development operations. This position will be responsible for the setup, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and field support of our Leica/Trimble/Topcon GPS/GNSS machine-control systems.

The ideal candidate has hands‑on experience with Leica machine control, GPS construction technology, heavy equipment, and civil site plans. This is a field‑focused position that will work directly with our superintendents, foremen, equipment operators, project managers, and estimating/engineering teams to ensure our machine‑control systems are accurate, reliable, and being utilized effectively.

Key Responsibilities

• Set up, configure, calibrate, and troubleshoot machine-control systems on dozers, excavators, graders, and other GPS‑equipped equipment.
• Set up and maintain GPS base stations, rovers, radios, antennas, displays, and related equipment.
• Perform project localizations/calibrations and verify site control before machine‑control operations begin.
• Load and manage project models, surfaces, alignments, utilities, and other design information used by field crews.
• Verify machine‑control accuracy against established project control and benchmarks.
• Perform routine grade checks and troubleshoot discrepancies between plans, models, GPS equipment, and actual field conditions.
• Diagnose GPS/GNSS, radio, communication, sensor, wiring, software, firmware, and equipment‑related issues.
• Provide rapid field support when machine‑control problems are affecting production.
• Train operators, foremen, and superintendents on proper use of Leica machine‑control equipment.
• Work with project teams to identify opportunities to increase the utilization of machine control and reduce traditional staking and grade checking.
• Coordinate with surveyors and project teams when additional control or survey information is required.
• Maintain an inventory of machine‑control equipment, components, tablets, rovers, base stations, and accessories.
• Keep systems, firmware, project files, and equipment configurations current and organized.
• Assist with transferring project information between the office and field.
• Document equipment issues, repairs, calibrations, and recurring problems.
• Help establish company‑wide standards and best practices for GPS and machine‑control technology.

Preferred Qualifications

• Leica machine‑control experience strongly preferred.
• Experience with Leica iCON, Leica ConX, GNSS/RTK, base/rover systems, and 3D machine control preferred.
• 3+ years of experience with machine control, construction surveying, GPS technology, heavy civil construction, or a related field preferred.
• Experience supporting GPS‑equipped dozers and excavators.
• Ability to read and understand civil construction plans, grading plans, profiles, cross sections, elevations, and surfaces.
• Understanding of grading, cut/fill, slopes, elevations, site control, and coordinate systems.
• Experience with AGTEK or similar civil modeling software is a plus.
• Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting ability.
• Comfortable working around heavy construction equipment and active job sites.
• Strong communication skills and ability to train equipment operators and field personnel.
• Ability to work independently and prioritize issues based on their impact to field production.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel between projects throughout the Metro Atlanta/North Georgia area.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who understands that machine control is a production tool, not simply a piece of GPS equipment. The right candidate will be comfortable working with technology while also understanding how dirt moves in the field.

This person should be able to arrive on a project, verify control, get machines connected and calibrated, identify problems quickly, and work directly with operators and field leadership to keep equipment productive.

Direct Leica machine‑control experience is highly preferred.
