The Machine Control Specialist is responsible for managing and supporting GPS and machine control operations across all active heavy civil construction projects at Conti Civil Southeast. This role ensures the proper setup, calibration, maintenance, and functionality of GPS-based grade control systems—primarily Trimble Earthworks—on a wide range of equipment used in sitework, utilities, and structural excavation. The Specialist will work closely with operations, engineering, and survey teams to maintain data accuracy, support production, and train field personnel. This position requires regular travel to job sites throughout the region as well as time spent in shop.

Responsibilities

• Leads and manages the deployment and functionality of Trimble GPS machine control systems on dozers, excavators, and other heavy civil equipment across multiple job sites.


• Sets up, calibrates, and localizes base stations and rover equipment to ensure precise site control and alignment with project benchmarks.


• Uploads 3D machine control models using Trimble Business Center and works with engineers and surveyors to ensure model accuracy.


• Trains equipment operators, foremen, and superintendents on Trimble Earthworks usage, including best practices, daily checks, and real-time troubleshooting.


• Works with suppliers (e.g., SITECH) for troubleshooting, parts orders, rentals, and firmware updates.


• Oversees routine system audits to ensure equipment performance, connectivity, and accurate positioning.


• Manages site-specific machine files, localizations, and data documentation for consistent control across all phases of work.


• Keeps up to date with Trimble advancements and continuously evaluates technologies that improve productivity and accuracy in field operations.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of GPS/machine control experience in heavy civil construction, including experience with large-scale grading, utilities, and structural excavation.


• Strong expertise with Trimble Earthworks, GCS900, Trimble Business Center and related data collectors.


• Proven experience setting up and maintaining base stations, site localizations, and rover workflows.


• Proficiency in reading civil blueprints, construction plans, and digital model files.


• Familiarity with UAV-based photogrammetry and drone survey software. FAA Part 107 certification is a plus.


• Experience in equipment operation (preferred) with a good understanding of real-world field tolerances and earthmoving practices.


• Ability to teach and communicate clearly with field personnel at all experience levels.


• Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.


• Willing and able to travel to jobsites on a regular basis.
