Aegis Worldwide is assisting in recruiting a Machine Builder for a Wheeling, IL-based manufacturer. The role focuses on building custom machinery and subassemblies from engineering drawings, aligning components for precision performance, and interfacing with a small team.

Ideal candidates have 3–5+ years in machine building, can read blueprints, and use calipers, micrometers, and gauges. Occasional overnight travel is required, and a contract-to-hire path offers growth within a privately owned

Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years of machine building, equipment building, or similar mechanical assembly experience.
  • Experience building subassemblies and complete assemblies.
  • Ability to work with precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, or dial indicators.
  • Read mechanical blueprints and engineering drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Build custom machinery and mechanical subassemblies from drawings and blueprints.
  • Install and assemble precision components, fixtures, slides, spindles, and related equipment.
  • Use hand and power tools, inspection equipment, and precision measurement instruments.
  • Read and verify measurements, document results, and ensure accuracy.
  • Perform final machine alignment and adjustments after startup.

Machine Builder – Custom Precision EquipmentLocation: Wheeling, ILShift: 1st Shift | 6:00 AM–2:30 PMCompensation: $30–$40/hour depending on experienceEmployment Type: Contract-to-Hire | 6 monthsTravel: Approximately 2–3 overnight trips per yearDegree: Not RequiredBuild Something DifferentAegis Worldwide is partnered with a long-established, privately owned manufacturer specializing in highly engineered equipment and precision finishing solutions used in demanding industries including aerospace, defense, and other advanced applications.This is not a high-volume production environment where you’ll spend your day assembling the same basic components. You’ll be part of a small, experienced team building custom, made-to-order machinery from the ground up.If you enjoy mechanical assembly, precision work, problem-solving, and seeing a complex machine come together piece by piece, this is a unique opportunity to put those skills to work.What You'll DoAs a Machine Builder, you’ll work on the mechanical assembly and build of custom industrial equipment and subassemblies.Responsibilities include:Build custom machinery and mechanical subassemblies from engineering drawings and blueprints.Install and assemble precision mechanical components, fixtures, slides, spindles, and related equipment.Use hand tools, power tools, inspection equipment, and precision measuring instruments.Read mechanical blueprints and engineering drawings and identify potential issues during assembly.Perform final machine alignment and adjustments once equipment is operational.Use calipers, micrometers, gauges, dial indicators, and other precision measurement equipment to verify accuracy.Document measurements and inspection results.Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work area.Work closely with a small team of mechanical and electrical builders to complete custom equipment.Occasionally travel to customer sites for equipment installation and startup.What We're Looking ForThe ideal candidate has a background building complete machines or mechanical assemblies, rather than simply assembling individual components.Required:3–5+ years of machine building, equipment building, machine tool, tool & die, or similar mechanical assembly experience.Experience building subassemblies and complete assemblies.Ability to regularly work with precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, or dial indicators.Ability to read and understand mechanical blueprints and engineering drawings.Strong attention to detail and craftsmanship.Organized, neat, and comfortable working in a clean, structured environment.Comfortable with occasional overnight travel for customer installations.Preferred:Experience with machine tools such as lathes, mills, grinders, or other precision equipment.Background with OEM or custom equipment manufacturers.Experience working in an ISO 9000 environment.Customer-facing or field service experience.Electrical experience, including panel building or troubleshooting equipment.No degree is required for this position.Why This Opportunity?Unique, custom-built machinery – every project can be different.Work with precision equipment and exotic materials used in highly technical industries.Join an extremely stable, privately owned manufacturer with decades of history and significant employee tenure.Work in a modern, state-of-the-art manufacturing and engineering environment.Small team with a manager who provides autonomy, trust, and the resources needed to succeed.Primarily hands-on mechanical building rather than repetitive production assembly.Opportunity to develop your skills in precision machine building, alignment, inspection, and equipment installation.Potential for overtime as the team continues to grow.BenefitsMedical InsuranceDental InsuranceVision InsuranceLife InsuranceShort-Term DisabilityLong-Term Disability401(k)Schedule1st Shift: 6:00 AM–2:30 PMAfter training, there may be flexibility to move to a 7:00–8:00 AM start time if preferred.Interview Process30-minute phone interview with the Engineering Manager.On-site interview with Engineering, the Machine Building team, and HR.Projected Start: ASAP
