The Medical Assistant (MA) will support outpatient clinical operations with a focus on urinalysis testing, contingency management, patient support, and clinical administrative duties. This role works under the direction and supervision of licensed clinical staff and providers and is responsible for accurate documentation, specimen collection and testing, patient communication, and support of day-to-day clinical operations.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Support
- Obtain and document vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, weight, and other measurements as directed.
- Assist providers and licensed clinical staff with patient visits and routine clinical procedures within the MA's scope of practice and training.
- Prepare examination and treatment areas and maintain appropriate clinical supplies and equipment.
- Assist with patient flow and coordinate care under the direction of the clinical team.
- Provide patients with routine, non-clinical information regarding appointments, program procedures, and other instructions as directed by clinical staff.
- Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with organizational policies and applicable requirements.
Admissions & Patient Support
- Assist with the administrative components of the admissions process, including gathering demographic, insurance, and other required information.
- Assist with obtaining and documenting medical history information as directed by licensed clinical staff.
- Support completion of required forms and documentation without independently performing clinical assessments or making clinical determinations.
- Coordinate with the clinical team to ensure required information is obtained and documented.
Administrative & Clerical Support
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the EMR.
- Assist with scheduling, appointment reminders, patient follow-up, and coordination of patient services.
- Handle routine patient phone calls and inquiries and direct clinical questions to the appropriate licensed staff.
- Maintain organized patient records and clinical documentation.
- Monitor and maintain clinical supplies and notify appropriate staff when supplies need to be reordered.
- Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to support efficient outpatient operations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned and within the scope of the MA role.
Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.
- Current Medical Assistant certification/registration, if required by organizational or program standards.
- Experience in outpatient, behavioral health, or substance use treatment preferred.
- Experience with urinalysis, toxicology screening, or specimen collection preferred.
- Knowledge of chain-of-custody procedures preferred.
- Familiarity with electronic medical records and basic computer applications.
- Strong documentation, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with patients and multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and follow established clinical and organizational protocols.
- Ability to perform duties under the direction and supervision of licensed clinical staff and within the scope of the Medical Assistant role.
